“On our way
back from the general store, with coffees in hand, Frank
and I spotted Colin out on the rocky beach of the harbor.
We pulled over to have a look. Colin was quietly working
on a sketch, and Frank and I decided to join him.
The clouds created
a soft light over the harbor. I started mixing my colors,
mostly cool tones that would set the mood of the day.
As the sketch started to develop, I place the warm rocks
in the foreground, and finished the scene with the dashes
of bright light reflecting off the boats, moored out
in the water. The quick, loose, spontaneity of this piece
is something I strive to covey in my work. Small studies
help facilitated this through the necessity of simplifying
shapes and color notes.”
