To Bee or Not to Bee    Oil on Canvas
Image Size 15 x 30      Framed 21 x 35     $3,900

“‘To Be or Not To Be’, so goes the famous Shakespearean soliloquy. Whether sailing the ocean off Cape Cod, or biting into a  summer-ripened apple, these are the things that sweeten our lives.”

Double Portrait in a Pitcher    Oil on Panel
Image Size 16 x 20      Framed 21 x 25     $2,200

“Capturing the reflection off a metallic surface gives the viewer a glimpse into the artis’s studio. The play of complementary colors of the oranges and lilacs gives the painting added energy.”

Blue Sky Yellow Boat    Oil on Canvas
Image Size 12 x 16     Framed 17.5 x 21.5     $1,400

“I loved the glowing colors in this late September scene. It really captured an essence of Provincetown for me; the end of a busy season as signified by the yellow boat propped idly against the house with its autumn-tinged woodbine.”

Life is Good    Oil on Canvas
Image Size 18 x 24      Framed 23 x 27     $3,600

“While walking Commercial Street in Provincetown I’m always amazed by the unique architecture of the buildings. Each building seems an actor on stage. I did some studies of this spot and snapped numerous photos, completing the painting in my studio. The light was sharp and crisp. The Provincetown Monument hung in the background, peeking out from behind the Unitarian Church. And the sign in the shadows really captured the mood of the day for me: Life is Good.”

Tea for Three    Oil on Canvas
Image Size 8 x 10      Framed 13 x 15     $650

“The primary pastel colors in these teacups invite the viewer into this airy, atmospheric setting for a midday break; to stop and smell the roses.”

Barney LevittBarney Levitt was raised in Upstate New York in the Adirondacks where he developed a keen appreciation for nature. As a child, drawing seemed as natural and necessary as breathing. Hopefully he will continue to do both for a long time to come.

Barney studied under Robert Sullins and received his B.A. in studio art from S.U.N.Y. at Oswego. He’s been a member of The Copley Society since 2004 and received Copley Artist designation in May 2006.

Artist’s Statement:
I’ve always been drawn to detail and it’s the realist painters who have been the source of my inspiration, from the Dutch Masters to contemporary painters including Stone Roberts, Scott Pryor, Scott Fraser and Gregory Gillespie.

I’ve often been called a bit twisted due to my rather warped brand of humor and it’s this sensibility that often shows in my paintings. Everyday objects are subjected to torturous manipulations at my hands, though sometimes I behave and go the more traditional route. I like to create a narrative that will take mundane objects and scenes, and give new meaning to their ordinariness. Symbolism plays strongly in my work. My paintings are the result of combining photographic references, direct observation, and imagination. I strive to create a sense of mystery or humor from seemingly disparate objects. There is an overall symmetry to my work though I like to create tension with precariously balanced objects suggesting the potential for motion or change.
