Creative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. \nAcknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, “After Hopper” celebrates the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways. \nWe will start with an oil painting demonstration by Maryalice Eizenberg at 4:00; the reception will run until 7:00. Eizenberg’s demonstration painting will be based on a building with architectural elements reminiscent of Hopper’s “Cape Cod Evening”. It has been unoccupied for many years and has that lonely feel often found in Hopper’s work. (Sadly\, it is scheduled for demolition in September.) \nWe hope you can join us.

SUMMARY:Phillip Koch Painting Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Artist Philip Koch will demonstrate in the Gallery his practice of creating his colorful landscape oil paintings based on the black and white charcoal drawings he makes on location in the open air. \nA former abstract artist\, Koch was inspired early in his career by the work of Edward Hopper to change to working in a realist direction. Since 1983 he has been granted 16 residencies to stay and work in Hopper’s Truro studio. \nKoch is the great grandson of John Wallace\, a Scottish landscape painter and the grandson of John Capstaff\, the inventor of the world’s first commercially available color film\, Kodachrome. Ironically Koch avoids photographs as a source\, relying on direct observation and memory to make his paintings. Koch stated\, “I like to think of myself as following the example of Edward Hopper — painting is about an inner response and imagination rather than photographic description.” \nIn 2017 Swope Art Museum in Indiana held a solo exhibition of Koch’s paintings of the Hopper studio and the surrounding area. The Arnot Art Museum paired Philip Koch’s oil Uncharted II with a landscape by the famous 19th century American Impressionist painter Willard Metcalfe in the Museum’s 23 Pairs exhibition that was featured in Fine Art Connoisseur. The March issue of Terre Haute Living featured a cover story on Koch’s painting. Spectrum magazine\, published by Arts Iliana published a cover article on Swope’s Koch exhibition in its March issue\, and the June 2017 issue of Cape Cod Life magazine carried a photo of Philip Koch’s painting of Edward Hopper’s studio\,Truro Studio: Two Rooms. Koch continues to serve as the Artist in Residence at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo\, NY. \n16 American art museum’s hold Koch’s paintings in their Permanent Collections. He is a senior professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The Burchfield Penney Art Center is preparing a major museum of exhibition of Koch’s work for 2018. Philip Koch’s painting North Passage is prominently featured in the new book by David and Carl Little\, Art of Acadia published by DownEast Books.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Truro residents Nick Norman of 3Harbors Realty and Helen Addison of the Addison Art Gallery\, “Celebrating Truro” brings together full- and part-time residents\, visitors\, artists and historians to celebrate at 3Harbors Realty\, 11 Truro Center Road\, Truro. Considered by many the “true” Cape Cod\, Truro has a history going back to Pilgrim explorations\, an abundance of preserved land\, dramatically changing coastlines\, and award-winning architecture. Today’s small farms\, makers of unique products\, and successful entrepreneurs add to the cultural fabric of best-selling authors and diversity of visual artists. \nDuring the reception\, Truro artists Marc Kundmann and Amy Sanders will be demonstrating painting in acrylic and pastel respectively. Graham Whitelaw\, founder of Pamet Sightseeing and Historical Tours\, and Beth Chapman of the Hopper House Tours\, will be on hand answer questions and explain more about rarely seen spots in this idyllic town. Whitelaw will also be displaying samples of his found object beach mobiles. Dan Sanders\, historian and Truro Historical Society volunteer\, will also be sharing his knowledge of this unique town and those who are preserving its history for future generations. Addison\, originator of After Hopper\, will offer information on Edward Hopper’s influence on contemporary painters. DESCRIPTION:Meet Philip and see his work at 5:30\, and then at 6\, he will give a talk and slide presentation on Hopper’s legacy of Cape Cod\, with an emphasis on the Truro studio. Discussion will follow. \nThe Highland House Museum is located on Highland Light Road in North Truro. The Museum occupies one of Truro’s best known landmarks\, the old Highland House\, a hotel built on the Highlands in 1907. Located near the Highland Light in North Truro\, it is a classic example of a turn-of-the-century summer resort hotel. A visit to the museum provides fascinating insight into the lives of the people of Truro dating back to early European settlers and the Native Americans that preceded them. Donations are graciously accepted. \nIt was seeing the light in Edward Hopper’s work that inspired Philip Koch early in his painting career to change from abstraction to realism. Koch\, a nationally recognized landscape painter\, has been granted over 15 residencies in Hopper’s former studio in Truro on Cape Cod. 14 American Art museums hold Koch’s work in their permanent collections.  \nDonations for the Highland House Museum will be gratefully accepted.

DESCRIPTION:“Hopper Stories” is a unique series of eight short fiction films inspired by Edward Hopper’s masterpieces. The list of paintings includes “Nighthawks”\, “A Woman in the Sun”\, “Conference at Night”\, “First Row Orchestra” and others. \nThe idea of the series was to ask directors to choose the Edward Hopper painting that most intrigued them\, and to make a short film out of it. The directors are either well known — such as Mathieu Amalric in France (Best Director Award\, Cannes Film Festival)\, amazing documentarist Sophie Fiennes in the UK\, and Hannes Stöhr in Germany — or soon to be\, such as Martin de Thurah\, the new ultra-trendy Danish director. \nThe casts include Harry Potter girl Clemence Poesy as Hopper’s “Woman in the Sun”\, Michael Stuhlbarg (“Hugo Cabret”) as Edward Hopper\, and US documentarist Frederick Wiseman who is Edward Hopper’s voice in Mathieu Amalric’s film. \nThe series has toured in film festivals around the world and acknowledges the ongoing fascination of modern filmmakers for Hopper’s work.
