SUMMARY:Maryalice Eizenberg One Woman Show
DESCRIPTION:Demonstration at 4:00; reception 5:00 to 7:00 \nMaryalice Eizenberg is an award-winning artist\, raised surrounded by a family of musicians supportive of her interest in the visual arts. She has been drawing and painting all of her life. She completed coursework at the Worcester and Springfield Fine Arts museums\, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Clark University\, and studied with painters John Cosby\, Donald Demers\, Kim English\,Daniel Keys\, Gregg Kreutz\, Joseph Paquet\, and Charles Sovek. Dramatic patterns of light and color are what attract her most to a subject. It is her emotional response to these elements that she strives to share with the viewer. \nEizenberg has been featured in Cape Cod Life and Chatham magazines and “The Creative Spirit\, Art in Chatham’s Old Village.” Her work also appears in Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: People and Places by Deborah Forman.\nShe teaches at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham\, and is a member of Oil Painters of America\, and Twenty One in Truro. Her work has been shown in museums on and off the Cape. Her work is held in private collections in the United States\, Europe and Japan. \n“Realism that excites has a foundation in abstraction of design. A pattern of light that makes form\, saturates color and creates mood holds it together and tells a story. It is the story that is the bond between the artist and the audience.” —Maryalice Eizenberg

SUMMARY:Jonathan Earle One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:Oil painting demonstration at 4:00; reception 5:00 to 7:00 \nJonathan Earle was born on Cape Cod in 1971. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in landscape architecture\, he spent 20 years in architectural and construction management. As his career path moved him further and further away from expressing his ideas with pencil and paper\, he returned to his true passion\, painting. \n“Creating a sense of place — the experience or emotions associated within a familiar setting — in the landscape is at the core of landscape architecture. It is this principle that I draw upon when painting\, the dimension that is formed by people’s relationship with their physical setting\, whether an actual figure in the painting or the viewer. I aim to capture the emotion and energy of that place\, whether it be the energy of a crowded street or the potential energy of idle traffic at a stoplight\, both evoke emotion and feeling for a place.” \nJonathan is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association\, where his work has received numerous Best in Show awards\, and The Arnold Coleman Award. His works have also received top awards from various other art organizations. Jonathan lives in Sandwich with his wife and two children.

SUMMARY:Beyond Bohemia at the Wellfleet Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Plein air painting starting at 8:00 am; reception 5:00 to 6:30. Please email helen@addisonart.com to participate and/or to to attend. Thank you. \nCape Cod’s naturally spectacular environment and cultural community continuously draw people from across the globe. As John Taylor Williams wrote\, this was true over 100 years ago as well. “Beginning around 1910\, those dedicated to radical political reform\, a new exploration of personal relationships free from Victorian strictures\, and a search for the new ‘American’ voice in writing\, painting\, architecture\, and theater congregated . . .” —The Shores of Bohemia\, A Cape Cod Story\, 1910-1960 \nHonoring this history and celebrating contemporary creators\, the Addison Art Gallery developed “Beyond Bohemia”—multi-media efforts including art exhibitions\, book signings\, panels\, music\, and plein air gatherings. Work by dozens of artists from across the United States and abroad will be shown in changing exhibits. \nCape Cod has long offered a plethora of opportunities for these diverse endeavors. “Few travelers are experts in American history or architecture\, in geology\, Atlantic coast fishing\, the modern theater\, antiques\, painting and marine biology. And yet when you visit the Cape all these are at hand\, tied up in a tight\, neat piece of country smelling of pine and offered you at the Canal Bridge like a prize box. There is so much packed into a small space in that magnificent yet cozy world called Cape Cod that fires the imagination. You want to know a lot of things\, all kinds of things on sea and land.” —Down Cape Cod by Katherine Dos Passos and Edith Shay (written in 1936) \nThis lively day of events includes a book signing by poet Jim Zola whose latest book\, “It’s Unremarkable that will Last”\, features a Paul Schulenburg painting as its cover\, from 4:00 to 5:00. \nReception from 5:00 to 6:30.

SUMMARY:Winter's Creative Explosion
DESCRIPTION:Painting Demonstrations. Live Music. Theater Groups. Book Signings. \nSome who aren’t on the Cape in the winter wonder what happens here after the aromas of suntan lotion and fried clams have dissipated. Those lucky enough to be here in the quieter months know it is a time of exploration\, socializing and productivity. \nThe public is invited to join authors\, artists\, performers\, friends and neighbors at the Addison Art Gallery in celebrating Cape creators and discovering the results of recent inspirations and diligent work. \nStarting at 4:00\, Jonathan McPhillips will be working on an oil painting of the Commercial Street approach to Provincetown. McPhillips\, a cum laude graduate of Connecticut College with a BFA in Fine Art\, captures the coastal splendor of New England. Equally adept in the studio or on location\, Jonathan’s work encompasses harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and the distinct architecture of the coastal marine environment. \nAt 5:00\, Maryalice Eizenberg will be painting a marsh scene in oil and Amy Sanders will be showing pastel techniques. \nMatthew Fitzpatrick\, author\nAfter 25 years on Wall Street\, Matt assessed his life and pursued his goal of becoming an author\, a dream hatched at twelve years old while reading Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot. This aspiration that was solidified years later over a pint of Guinness with Dennis Lehane\, who Matt hosted at the Pollard Library in Lowell\, MA named after his maternal grandfather. As a 100-ton US Coast Guard master captain\, Matt splits his time between Chatham and Falmouth. \nMatt will be signing his recently released fourth novel\, Forsythia’s Ride\, which is set in Chatham. Paul Schulenburg signing his book well as to discuss his recent paintings. \nThe staffs of two renowned Cape theaters will be on hand to preview this upcoming seasons and answer questions about how you can become involved. \nCape Rep Theatre\nArtists who wanted to develop a company dedicated to creativity and professionalism founded Cape Rep Theatre in 1986 and have worked hard to choose plays and musicals that continually challenge the artists who work there. Their two theaters are on 7 acres of land in Nickerson State Park in Brewster with a 135-seat Indoor Theater and an 200-seat Outdoor Theatre. “We make a deliberate choice to bring in artists from outside our community to keep our vision broad\, our company connected to the wider world and our productions as professional and creative as possible. Often our choices are works that may not ordinarily be produced because we try not to let size of cast\, degree of difficulty (or relative obscurity!) step in the way of choosing a show.” \nWellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre (WHAT)\nLauded by the New York Times for “establishing a beachhead for serious theater on Cape Cod”\, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater is a not-for-profit professional theater company dedicated to enriching the cultural life of the Outer Cape through plays and innovative programming that entertains\, inspires\, and informs a diverse\, multi-generational audience. WHAT has made its home at the state-of-the-art Julie Harris Stage on Route 6 in Wellfleet. 2024 marks WHAT’s 40th Anniversary and brings an eclectic season of drama\, comedy\, music\, and new works\, along with programs for youth and families. \nSarah Burrill will be performing her ever delightful song stylings. SUMMARY:Exploring the Portrait Tradition at Preservation Hall
DESCRIPTION:Master artist Paul Schulenburg and Wellfleet oysterman Richard Blakeley to Welcome the Public \nIf you haven’t yet had an opportunity to meet Paul Schulenburg or Richard Blakeley\, men who have mastered intriguing\, distinctive career paths\, now’s your chance. \nPaul Schulenburg and members of the Schulenburg Studio Figure Painting Group will begin painting Wellfleet oysterman Richard Blakeley at 3:00 at WPH. Painting will continue through the start of the reception (a great time to meet with artists and to learn more about their work) at 5:00. This event marks the opening of the month-long exhibition of Schulenburg’s Figure Paintings. \nLong before the onset of photography\, portraits served to capture a person’s likeness. As well\, portraits conveyed power\, familial ties\, virtue\, or other aspects of the subject. Today\, portraits continue to portray far more of a person than a photograph. They can speak volumes about an individual’s personality and their life. \n“Paul Schulenburg is one of those rare painters who can capture not just what something looks like but what it feels like. . . That alone makes his work a treasure.” —Sebastian Junger\, author of A Perfect Storm \nIt is always interesting to watch a diverse group of painters develop a work from a live model. This congenial group of artists is eager to share their knowledge and will happily answer audience questions. The model for this session\, Richard Blakeley\, is a popular Wellfleetian integrally tied to the oyster industry. The Schulenburg Figure Painters have created portraits of such recognizable figures as film stars Dermot Mulroney and Alfie Woodward\, artists Salvatore Del Deo and Cynthia Packard\, and fisherman Keith Rose. \nSchulenburg’s work of the Cape’s fishing fleet is collected nationally. Speaking of his passion\, Schulenburg said\, “One reason I am drawn to painting the fleet because the work is foreign to me. These men and women risk their lives in an unprotected environment. I paint on dry land\, working to produce a painting\, to capture a tradition.\n“We are involved in work that goes back to early days. Humans have long caught fish for nourishment\, and they have drawn — in the sand and on cave walls — for pleasure and to communicate. Today\, with diminishing fish stocks and AI\, our ancient endeavors hang in a precarious balance. I am honored that so many appreciate my commitment to these endeavors.”

We’ll toast to this most worthy organization\, see award-winning artists and painting instructor Maryalice Eizenberg demonstrate oil painting\, and enjoy the song stylings of the ever-popular Sarah Burrill. \n \nChildren frequently enter the foster care system with no belongings\, or with a trash bag containing just a few clothing items. Babies often arrive with no diapers\, bottles\, or formula. This is a great challenge for foster parents who need to provide necessities. \n \nThe Cape Cod Foster Closet provides clothing\, shoes\, toys\, books\, baby equipment (including formula and car seats) and furniture for all ages. Cape Cod Foster Closet also provides a new duffel bag or backpack for each child so that they never have to carry their belongings in a trash bag again. All items are donated by our generous community and provided free to families who care for other people’s children.

SUMMARY:Plein Air Painting at Edgewood Farms\, Truro
DESCRIPTION:During the opening reception for Truro Treasures 2023\, Addison Art Gallery and Truro Center for the Arts will present artists painting en plein air at beautiful Edgewood Farms. It is suggested that you arrive early (sunset will be at about 7:00). Carpooling is strongly advised. \nPlein air\, French for “open air\,” is used to describe paintings created outdoors. In Italian\, the term would be alfresco. In the 1870s\, the growth of plein air painting flourished with the introduction of paints in tubes. (Previously\, painters made their own paints by grinding and mixing dry pigments with linseed oil.) French Impressionists\, including Claude Monet\, Edouard Manet\, Edouard Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir\, advocated en plein air painting. Charles Webster Hawthorne\, who is attributed with starting the art colony in Provincetown\, came to Cape Cod to teach painting en plein air. \n“With plein air painting\, the eye perceives light and shadows from direct observation. Painting from memory is a challenge; you cannot possibly remember the nuances of reality. Photography can flatten space and distort perspective and color—while being helpful in the studio\, nothing substitutes for being there.” —Paul Schulenburg

SUMMARY:Jonathan McPhillips One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:“Each painting is a problem to solve\, or a puzzle to piece together; a playful\, yet serious endeavor\, and a celebration of our surroundings. There is no greater reward than knowing that a painting has captivated a friend or a stranger. We see many things everyday with heightened digital clarity\, yet original artwork always conveys a sense of mystery and magic for all. I see painting as an unspoken and unwritten way to connect our hearts and minds through depictions of shared experience.” —Jonathan McPhillips \nJonathan McPhillips graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a Cum Laude Distinction in Fine Art. Working equally in the studio and on location\, his work includes the harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and architecture of our coastal marine environment—a celebration of coastal New England. \nRecent accomplishments include multiple awards in juried shows at the Salmagundi Club\, NY\, NY and the achievement of signature status in The American Impressionists Society. Jonathan continues to be invited by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the “Art in Embassies” program which has sent his work to U.S. embassies around the globe

SUMMARY:Life at Land's End: Marc Kundmann
DESCRIPTION:Freedom. Peace. Exploration. Creation. Connection. Life in a land of possibilities and gifts.\n\n  \nMarc will demonstrate painting on the gallery lawn during the artists’ reception from 4:00 to 6:00. (He will also hold open studio hours Friday\, September 10 from noon to 4:00 at 14 Bradford Street\, Provincetown.) \nShowing new work year round \nMarc Kundmann works in encaustic\, oil\, charcoal\, acrylic\, and cold wax allowing him to build and remove layers of color\, transparency\, and pigments\, and to use texture expressively. His hope is that the resulting layers create not only intriguing and beautiful surfaces\, but also give emotional life to the subjects and hint at the mystery inside. Kundmann studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of creating on Cape Cod including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them he learned to explore materials\, freeing himself from the constraints of representing the real world and allowing him to work expressively\, responding to color and composition allowing the painting to evolve into its final form. \n  \nArtist’s statement \nBefore I embarked on my adventure in painting\, I asked an artist I respected for his thoughts on where to begin and how to approach a painting. His best advice: don’t try to paint a feeling or specific emotion. Just paint. The emotional quality will come through. Keeping this in mind\, I began to paint my surroundings\, the wild beaches of Truro in particular\, en plein aire. I studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of painting and art-making on the Cape including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann’s\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them I learned to explore materials\, free myself from the constraints of representing the real world and work in a more expressive way\, responding to color and composition and creating work from both intellect and emotion. I am also particularly influenced by the Bay Area Figurative Movement including painters David Park\, Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn.

SUMMARY:Andrea Petitto: Body Language
DESCRIPTION:Meet Andrea on Saturday\, August 28 for a reception with demonstration from 4:00 to 6:00 \nAndrea Petitto shares intimate observations creating an uncommon and lively vision of people and animals living their everyday lives. Bold paint strokes express figures within the sun and atmosphere of Cape Cod beaches and markets\, often within exciting abstractions. \n  \n“These paintings have been aptly described as ‘the middles of stories’ where the viewer might sense beginnings and ends from their own experience.” —Andrea Petitto \n \nAndrea Petitto was born in rural Massachusetts where\, in her youth\, she had to choose between art and science. Andrea’s father had been a sculptor and Andrea grew up making things with modeling clay. Instead of the usual children’s literature\, as a small child Andrea was fascinated by the images in large folio books of Rodin and Michelangelo sculptures. These influences can still be seen in the strong sense of solidity and form in her paintings. In 1990\, after a career as university professor and industry consultant\, she moved to art. A course in oil painting in 1997 was a life-changing event. Around the turn of the century Andrea devoted herself to the study of painting and became a full-time artist with a particular passion for the human figure. Her love of dogs and other animals lead her to include animals in her figurative work. Andrea taught art classes at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua NY\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and Creative Arts Center\, Chatham. She has had solo shows in Canandaigua and at the Copley Society in Boston\, and has won many awards in Rochester\, NY\, Boston’s Copley Society\, and at many venues on Cape Cod. Artist’s Statement I have always made some kind of art. As a child\, I created things with clay\, and I have always made drawings of things that I like to look at or just imagine. Later in life I was introduced to oil painting and never looked back. The paint made my drawings come to life. Figural work is my passion because of the evocative nature of body language and form. A level of abstraction in the figure allows the viewer to experience the emotional impact in a universal way\, without concern for a specific identity. Brush or knife strokes are more important to me than representational detail. I like the tension between the sense of paint and surface on one hand and the illusion of form and depth on the other. I try to make my subject matter look like it’s been chiseled from stone and yet alive and breathing\, a contrast that I find beautiful and exciting.

SUMMARY:As We See It: McGauley and Eizenberg
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the beaches\, woodlands and gardens of New England and Cape Cod as seen through the eyes of Maryalice Eizenberg and Sharon McGauley. Two accomplished oil painters\, working in different but beautifully complimentary styles\, offer their unique and inspired perspectives on the land and sea made with color and light. \n \n \nMeet the artists on Saturday\, August 21 Maryalice Eizenberg Demonstration 11 to 1; Sharon McGauley Demonstration 1 to 3; Artists’ Reception from 4 to 6. \n \n \nMaryalice Eizenberg is an award-winning artist\, raised surrounded by a family of musicians supportive of her interest in the visual arts. She has been drawing and painting all of her life. She completed coursework at the Worcester and Springfield Fine Arts museums\, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Clark University\, and studied with painters John Cosby\, Donald Demers\, Kim English\, Daniel Keys\, Gregg Kreutz\, Joseph Paquet\, and Charles Sovek. Dramatic patterns of light and color are what attract her most to a subject. It is her emotional response to these elements that she strives to share with the viewer. \n \n \nEizenberg has been featured in Cape Cod Life and Chatham magazines and The Creative Spirit\, Art in Chatham’s Old Village. Her work also appears in Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: People and Places by Deborah Forman. \n \n \nShe teaches at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham\, and is a member of Oil Painters of America\, and Twenty One in Truro. Her work has been shown in museums on and off the Cape. Her work is held in private collections in the United States\, Europe and Japan. \n \n \nArtist’s Statement Realism that excites has a foundation in abstraction of design. A pattern of light that makes form\, saturates color and creates mood holds it together and tells a story. It is the story that is the bond between the artist and the audience. \n \n \nSharon McGauley\, an internationally collected artist\, has earned multiple grants (including the Ann McKee Fund\, several Art Reach Fellowships\, and a Rodel Foundation Fellowship) and a residency at the Espy Foundation in Washington State. She studied art at Connecticut College with Barkley Hendricks and Andrea Wollensak and continues to study and work with master painters. Sharon paints plein air and in her studio. She lives in Portland\, Maine and spends a lot of time in her family home on Cape Cod. \n \n \nHer work has shown in numerous solo and juried shows across the country\, and has been featured in a solo show at the Key West Custom House Museum. McGauley paintings can be found in prestigious collections in the US\, Canada\, Europe and Japan. \n \n \nArtist’s Statement Land and seascape paintings are\, for me\, about capturing a sense of place. The experience of solitude is the starting point; the sense of being alone and engulfed by the landscape is one I frequently seek out. I am especially drawn to places where the sea meets the sky in such a way that you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. I seek out dramatic weather and lighting conditions. I love hazy days when the ocean melts into the sky\, watching a thick fog roll in\, snowstorms\, and experiencing the changes in light when a summer storm comes through. I am always searching for something different in the atmosphere that shifts and changes the mood of a place; it allows me to play with that feeling and recreate it as I paint or push it even further in the studio.

Please join the artists for a toast from 4:00 to 6:00 and treats all day. \n\n\nFor a quarter of a century\, the Addison Art Gallery has been honored to represent emerging and master artists from across the United States\, Canada and France. The gallery’s reputation for personal service and community support is unmatched.\nAfter Hopper Artists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by his work and the area that this great American painter chose as his home. Acknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, “After Hopper” celebrates the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways. The Addison Art Gallery invites the public to “After Hopper” events and exhibitions of work created by contemporary artists inspired by Edward Hopper and Cape Cod.\nIn Thoreau’s Views “Wishing to get a better view than I had yet had of the ocean\, which\, we are told\, covers more than two-thirds of the globe\, but of which a man who lives a few miles inland may never see any trace\, more than of another world\, I made a visit to Cape Cod.” —Henry David Thoreau\n“Best Art Gallery Cape Cod” — Cape Cod Magazine\n“One of the nation’s leading year-round galleries” American Art Collector magazine\n“Only the most riveting of talent“—Insider’s Guide to Cape Cod\nEditor’s Choice Award: Fine Art Gallery—Cape Cod Life\n“One of the most successful galleries in the country” astounding “the public with art by newly discovered artists and masterpieces by established artists.” American Art Collector magazine\n“Housed in a beautiful and quaint old red house\, the gallery’s charming appeal draws visitors from around the world to its doors. Once inside\, the exciting and resplendent artwork beckons collectors to walk slowly through its warm and cozy interior to take in each and every painting along the way. DESCRIPTION:“Current Attractions” New paintings celebrating the places and lives we love\, and the summertime connections that last a lifetime.\nJoin Jonathan for a demonstration from 11:00 to 1:00 and a reception from 4:00 to 6:00 \n\n\nJonathan McPhillips graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a Cum Laude Distinction in Fine Art. Working equally in the studio and on location\, his work includes the harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and architecture of our coastal marine environment—a celebration of coastal New England. \n  \nRecent accomplishments include multiple awards in juried shows at the Salmagundi Club\, NY\, NY and the achievement of signature status in The American Impressionists Society. Jonathan continues to be invited by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the “Art in Embassies” program which has sent his work to U.S. embassies around the globe. \n  \nArtist’s Statement\n“Each painting is a problem to solve\, or a puzzle to piece together; a playful\, yet serious endeavor\, and a celebration of our surroundings. There is no greater reward than knowing that a painting has captivated a friend or a stranger. We see many things everyday with heightened digital clarity\, yet original artwork always conveys a sense of mystery and magic for all. I see painting as an unspoken and unwritten way to connect our hearts and minds through depictions of shared experience.” Jonathan McPhillips
