Questions and comments from audience member of all ages will be encouraged and add to the event. \nSandy Macfarlane will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of her latest book\, Swirling Currents.\nDuring one remarkable day early in 2017\, more than two hundred highly endangered North Atlantic right whales\, nearly half of the entire world’s population\, were seen in Cape Cod Bay. Swirling Currents tells the stories behind the headlines highlighting how a local event is often part of a much larger picture. Whales; sharks chasing seals chasing fish; turtles stranding; functionally extinct oysters and aquaculture filling the gap; the Gulf of Maine heating swiftly and the Gulf Stream slowing down — all happening in the global context of dynamic coastal change. \nSusan Baur will be signing A Guide to the Best Ponds on Cape Cod and the Best Ways of Preserving Them. The aim of the Guide is to teach readers how the pond ecosystems on Cape Cod work and encourage them to treat ponds with care. With this guide you can find hidden jewels\, learn what every pond needs to stay healthy\, and leave those you visit cleaner than you found them. \nBaur lived in Chatham from 2003 to 2009 where she switched from swimming in salt water to fresh. Soon she became intrigued by the painted turtles\, stinkpot or musk turtles\, and enormous snapping turtles that she encountered in local ponds from Orleans to Harwich. She started an illustrated journal and made an entry for every one of the 60-plus swims she took each summer\, noting each turtle she encountered. Drawing maps of several ponds\, she marked exactly where she saw each one. Eventually she was able to identify about a dozen turtles by sight. Next she bought a couple of wet suits and extended her turtle-watching season to a full five months. \nHeidi Clemmer and Marisa Picariello will be presenting the Cape Cod Eco-Tales book series. Author Heidi Clemmer was an educator at Wellfleet Elementary School for 21 years. Cape Cod Eco-Tales is the result of a passion for the varied and significant eco-systems that dominate the Outer Cape Cod landscape. Illustrator Marisa Picariello is a Wellfleet resident who studied art at Wheaton College. SUMMARY:Phillip Koch Painting Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Artist Philip Koch will demonstrate in the Gallery his practice of creating his colorful landscape oil paintings based on the black and white charcoal drawings he makes on location in the open air. \nA former abstract artist\, Koch was inspired early in his career by the work of Edward Hopper to change to working in a realist direction. Since 1983 he has been granted 16 residencies to stay and work in Hopper’s Truro studio. \nKoch is the great grandson of John Wallace\, a Scottish landscape painter and the grandson of John Capstaff\, the inventor of the world’s first commercially available color film\, Kodachrome. Ironically Koch avoids photographs as a source\, relying on direct observation and memory to make his paintings. Koch stated\, “I like to think of myself as following the example of Edward Hopper — painting is about an inner response and imagination rather than photographic description.” \nIn 2017 Swope Art Museum in Indiana held a solo exhibition of Koch’s paintings of the Hopper studio and the surrounding area. The Arnot Art Museum paired Philip Koch’s oil Uncharted II with a landscape by the famous 19th century American Impressionist painter Willard Metcalfe in the Museum’s 23 Pairs exhibition that was featured in Fine Art Connoisseur. The March issue of Terre Haute Living featured a cover story on Koch’s painting. Spectrum magazine\, published by Arts Iliana published a cover article on Swope’s Koch exhibition in its March issue\, and the June 2017 issue of Cape Cod Life magazine carried a photo of Philip Koch’s painting of Edward Hopper’s studio\,Truro Studio: Two Rooms. Koch continues to serve as the Artist in Residence at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo\, NY. \n16 American art museum’s hold Koch’s paintings in their Permanent Collections. He is a senior professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The Burchfield Penney Art Center is preparing a major museum of exhibition of Koch’s work for 2018. Philip Koch’s painting North Passage is prominently featured in the new book by David and Carl Little\, Art of Acadia published by DownEast Books.

DESCRIPTION:Outermost House \nInspired by the Cape Cod National Seashore and Henry Beston’s Outermost House \nHenry Beston’s 1928 book\, The Outermost House\, is a classic of American Literature. Beston (1888-1968) wrote the book after spending a solitary “year” in a 20×16 house on the dunes of Eastham on Cape Cod\, studying and observing the wonders of the elements in this stunning setting. Plein air painting in the morning\, talk\, book signing and reception in the afternoon. \nThe Outermost House is considered one of the seminal works of today’s environmental movements and is one of the reasons that the Cape Cod National Seashore exists today. Rachel Carson said it was the only book that ever influenced her writing.

SUMMARY:Doberstein and Sanders Demo for Wild Care
DESCRIPTION:Come see Amy Sanders and SaraJane Doberstein demonstrate their unique painting techniques as part of our day “Swooping in for Wild Care”. Amy will demonstrate building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works towards bringing a painting to life through multiple layers. Pastel is a unique medium\, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance that is the hallmark of the medium. \nWatching SaraJane\, you will see the media and techniques she uses to achieve the unique perspective in her coastal work. She will begin with a raw umber tonal value underpainting. She will paint from there using the layering techniques scumbling and glazing\, with some areas painted alla prima\, wet in wet. Each artist will share knowledge based on decades of experience. \nAudience questions and comments will be encouraged and add to the afternoon.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Truro
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Truro residents Nick Norman of 3Harbors Realty and Helen Addison of the Addison Art Gallery\, “Celebrating Truro” brings together full- and part-time residents\, visitors\, artists and historians to celebrate at 3Harbors Realty\, 11 Truro Center Road\, Truro. Considered by many the “true” Cape Cod\, Truro has a history going back to Pilgrim explorations\, an abundance of preserved land\, dramatically changing coastlines\, and award-winning architecture. Today’s small farms\, makers of unique products\, and successful entrepreneurs add to the cultural fabric of best-selling authors and diversity of visual artists. \nDuring the reception\, Truro artists Marc Kundmann and Amy Sanders will be demonstrating painting in acrylic and pastel respectively. Graham Whitelaw\, founder of Pamet Sightseeing and Historical Tours\, and Beth Chapman of the Hopper House Tours\, will be on hand answer questions and explain more about rarely seen spots in this idyllic town. Whitelaw will also be displaying samples of his found object beach mobiles. Dan Sanders\, historian and Truro Historical Society volunteer\, will also be sharing his knowledge of this unique town and those who are preserving its history for future generations. Addison\, originator of After Hopper\, will offer information on Edward Hopper’s influence on contemporary painters. Amy Costa of Cape Cod Kombucha will be offering tastings of various flavors. \nThe newly-refurbished 3Harbors Realty offices will be adorned with original paintings of Truro including plein air works completed that weekend. SUMMARY:Arts for the Earth: Painting\, Writing and Singing to benefit for the Orleans Conservation Trust
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Earth Day 2018\, come and watch award-winning painters at work\, hear acclaimed singer-songwriter Sarah Burrill perform\, and meet authors Robert Finch and Peter Trull who will be signing their books. \nArtists demonstrating include Maryalice Eizenberg\, who will be painting in oil\, and Amy Sanders\, who will demonstrate in pastel. Adults and children alike are amazed to see the processes that lead to a finished painting. The artists are happy to answer questions and discuss their techniques. \nOne of America’s leading nature writers\, Robert Finch has lived on Cape Cod since 1971. He has published eight books of essays and is co-editor of The Norton Book of Nature Writing. His weekly radio commentary\, A Cape Cod Notebook\, has been broadcast since 2005 on WCAI\, the Woods Hole NPR affiliate of WGBH\, and for which he twice received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Radio Writing. His essays have appeared in numerous magazines and journals and his books have been translated into Japanese and Chinese. He was named as one of the New England Literary Lights by the Associates of the Boston Public Library\, and has received the Non-Fiction Award from the New England Booksellers Association. \nMr. Finch has taught at numerous colleges and writers conferences\, including Williams College\, Emerson College\, Carleton College\, Spalding University\, Penn State\, the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center and the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. A resident of Wellfleet\, his latest book is The Outer Beach: A Thousand-Mile Walk on Cape Cod’s Atlantic Shore.\nPeter Trull has been involved in field research and education on Cape Cod for 40 years. He conducted field research in Guyana and Surinam\, studying the market trapping of Common and Roseate Terns\, working with local bird trappers in several coastal villages where he hesitatingly admits he’s eaten Common Terns and 15 to 20 species of sandpipers and plovers. He served as Education Director at The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies and presently teaches at the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School. He has written six books on the Cape’s natural history\, describing the lives of coywolves\, cetaceans and his lifelong passion\, birds. His newest book The Life of Terns – Birds of Paradox\, will be released in 2019. \nOn Mr. Trull’s most recent book\, The Gray Curtain: “Peter Trull is a world class naturalist and the go-to expert for all things wild on Cape Cod. In this fascinating book\, he explores the complexity of cause and effect in a natural ecosystem as three of the ocean’s top predators converge on Cape Cod.” — Gregory Skomal\, Ph.D. Senior Marine Fisheries Scientist. MA Marine Fisheries \nThis lively event will feature a raffle prize that includes a framed photography by National Geographic photographer Hardie Truesdale\, books by Robert Finch\, Peter Trull and Mike O’Connor\, and gift certificates from Addison Art Gallery and Lakefarm Gardens. DESCRIPTION:Join friends and artists in their cozy gallery rooms for a winter’s toast along with an opportunity to see Maryalice Eizenberg\, Andrea Petitto and Amy Sanders develop ideas into paintings. Watching an artist at work offers the viewer a greater understanding of the process\, techniques\, thinking\, skills and experimenting that go into a completed work. These award-winning painters welcome audience questions and comments. Additional artists will also be attending. \nThe Addison Art Gallery’s year-round gatherings are ideal opportunities to socialize with friends old and new surrounded by captivating art. \nMaryalice Eizenberg is an award-winning artist who has been featured in Cape Cod Life and Chatham magazines\, “The Creative Spirit\, Art in Chatham’s Old Village” and Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: People and Places by Deborah Forman. She teaches at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham and is a member of Oil Painters of America\, Cape Cod Plein Air Painters and 21 in Truro. Her work is held in private collections in the United States\, Europe and Japan. \nAndrea Petitto\, after a career as university professor and industry consultant\, around the turn of the century Andrea devoted herself to the study of painting and became a full-time artist with a particular passion for the human figure and her love of dogs. Andrea taught art classes in NY\, and at Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and Creative Arts Center\, Chatham. She has had solo shows in NY and at the Copley Society in Boston\, and has won many awards in NY\, the Copley Society in Boston\, and on Cape Cod. \nAmy Sanders paints an Outer Cape in detail that few see\, bringing her keen eye and love to the task. She captures the serenity and beauty of the pines\, the power and delight of the ocean and bay\, the peaceful and fragile landscape of the dunes\, the joy of the beachgoers\, and the weather of the Outer Cape. Amy is an award-winning artist\, Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America\, and a respected art juror/judge in the New England art show circuit. She has exhibited in galleries in Connecticut and on the Cape.

SUMMARY:Painting Animals and other Figures using Palette Knife and Brushes
DESCRIPTION:Demo at the Mastering your Mark Art Conference \n  \nAndrea Petitto will demonstrate how she begins and develops a painting using brushes and palette knives at various stages of the work\, and the use of knife strokes to create texture\, to blend colors on the canvas\, and to express line and mass. Using a palette knife to paint introduces a whole range of textures and strokes that contributes to a masterful sense of paint handling. It also makes possible an enhanced crispness of color and line for bolder and more compelling images. In any given painting\, an artist can use both brushes and palette knives for different effects and different stages of the painting process.
