SUMMARY:Cleber Stecei One Man Show Reception
DESCRIPTION:Praised for his magnificent 2016 Pops by the Sea painting celebrating the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, Cleber Stecei continues to rapidly garner accolades and collectors. \nStecei has a great appreciation for realistic portrayals of the human form\, as well as the spontaneous brush work of a plein air painting\, and he carefully tries to combine those qualities in his work. \n“A Master in the Making…represented by one of the Cape’s most prestigious galleries\, Addison Art in Orleans. His work has been noted in several national art publications and his paintings are in collections countrywide. Stecei’s talent\, age\, and new presence in the market have thrust him to the heady upper echelons of the art scene.”—Mary Grauerholz\, Cape Cod Life

SUMMARY:Sharon McGauley One Woman Show
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning\, internationally collected oil painter Sharon McGauley is known for her atmospheric\, evocative oil paintings of land and sea. Her paintings are studies of the natural environment that synthesize observation\, memory and experience. Long inspired by the Cape\, McGauley expands on her landscape work and has also begun adding a subtle figurative element. These paintings focus on groups of beachgoers exploring low tide in a variety of lights\, allowing McGauley to play with the subtle abstraction of figures getting lost and absorbed by the seascape. A uniquely Cape scene and experience\, McGauley is enjoying working with the details and personalities of the individuals that have made their way into her canvases. Her work relies on simple compositions and subtle color harmonies to capture and convey her enthusiasm for vast expanses of sky\, sea and land.

SUMMARY:After Hopper in Wellfleet Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Work by contemporary artists inspired by Edward Hopper and the places he painted on Cape Cod \nIn 1930\, his first year renting on Cape Cod\, Edward Hopper painted a watercolor entitled “Wellfleet Bridge.” “Wellfleet Road” was completed in 1931. “The Capron House”\, a painting of one of Wellfleet’s most pristine and historically significant homes\, was completed in 1933. \nWhile Edward and Josephine Hopper had spent most of their married lives in a rented apartment in New York City\, when an inheritance allowed them to purchase property\, they bought a lot overlooking Cape Cod Bay from Wellfleet’s Lorenzo Dow Baker. Tin 1934\, now in their Hopper-designed Cape Cod home\, he painted “The Forked Road.”  Two years later he captured a scene of Pamet Point Road entitled “Spindly Locusts.” \nLike their neighbors\, they got their groceries in Wellfleet and dined at the Lighthouse Restaurant. \nDuring the war\, Jo\, who wanted to spend her time painting and supporting her husband’s career\, joined other Outer Cape women in responding to rationing by clamming to make clam pie and chowder\, and garnering beach plums for jelly. \nFar from prolific\, year after year\, for months on end\, Hopper didn’t paint. He did spend days and precious gas traveling to find subjects for his masterpieces. \n“The Martha McKeen of Wellfleet”\, one of his most popular works\, was completed in 1944. \nThe Wellfleet Public Library\, working with the Addison Art Gallery\, is pleased to present an After Hopper℠ exhibition and related events. After Hopper℠ supports the legacy of America’s greatest realist painter by recognizing his contribution to contemporary painters inspired by his work and the places he painted. \nHopper was well read — novels\, short stories\, history\, poetry\, periodicals. He went to the theatre and loved the cinema. With After Hopper℠\, we hope to offer our patrons insights into this American icon and an awareness of the creativity surrounding us today.

SUMMARY:In Edward Hopper's Town Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join artists and friends for a reception celebrating contemporary work inspired by Edward Hopper and the places that inspired this great American painter. Sue Keller on the piano. \nArtists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Nearly half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by the area that this great American painter chose as his home. \nIn my twenty years of running a gallery on Cape Cod\, I have met many artists who credit Hopper as an influence while creating in their own distinct styles — choosing their own sites to interpret and expressing their own emotions. But not every visitor is familiar with Hopper’s legacy — just as few tourists are aware that Provincetown\, not Plymouth\, is where the Pilgrims first set anchor. \nPerhaps because of who he was\, a man with minimal social interaction who chose his friends carefully and kept his distance from the vibrant arts community we have long treasured here\, Hopper’s deep ties to Cape Cod are not as widely acknowledged as they deserve to be. \nEvery day\, on my way home from work\, I see the house that Edward and Jo\, his wife\, rented before they decided to build their home on a dune overlooking Cape Cod Bay. From my loft\, I can see the house he built\, its great window flooded with northern light. I live surrounded by the sites he painted and the families he brought into his closely guarded circle. \nFortunate as I am to live in this exceptional part of our amazing country\, and however much I find myself captivated by his work\, what motivated me to launch “After Hopper” are the gifts that — uninsistently\, reclusively — he handed down to the artists of today. \nCreative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. Acknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, I initiated “After Hopper” to celebrate the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways. — Helen Addison copyright 2015 AddisonArt\, Inc.

The Land Ho!\, the region’s most popular restaurant\, is widely respected for its support of the arts\, and known for its great food\, inviting charm and lively good times. \n“Capture the Cape is a wonderful opportunity for artists and art lovers to experience together the beautifully rich autumnal colors and light that belongs to Cape Cod alone. It is no wonder this area\, with its unique light\, has captured the imagination of artists for over a century. Edward Hopper stated that: “If you could say it in words\, there would be no reason to paint.” Nothing can replace the direct experience of being on the scene\, painting your surroundings with all senses ignited\, whether it be that boat on the water\, an old antique house with a story to tell\, a peaceful marshland or a meandering tree-lined lane. Come and witness the joy as we reflect upon our creative experience.” — Susan Overstreet\, artist \n  \nIn the case of rain\, please call the Addison Art Gallery at 508.255.6200 for information on interior places where the artists will be painting.
