SUMMARY:Wild Care Week
DESCRIPTION:Artists from across the Cape and beyond are joining the Addison Art Gallery in support of Wild Care. Spearheaded by artists SaraJane Doberstein and Amy Sanders\, and Helen Addison\, Wild Care Week features new works\, sales of which will benefit Wild Care. Please visit the gallery and preview paintings at addisonart.com. For more information\, email helen@addisonart.com. \nJoin Amy Sanders to discover the secret to building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works toward bringing a painting to life through the building up of multiple layers for a demonstration on the gallery lawn Friday\, July 17 at 11:00. (Masks and physical distance required) Pastel is a unique medium\, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance that is the hallmark of the medium. Questions\, comments and conversation of all things pastel are encouraged. \n\n\nSaraJane’s painting style ranges from traditional representational to contemporary realism\, and her work reflects a fascination with the natural world and its transformations. Whether her subject is a glossy cluster of cherries\, the chipped paint of an antique\, or the colorful jumble of seashells on a beach\, her paintings capture the larger-than-life essence of everyday objects and scenes. Her playful\, whimsical approach to her subjects is balanced by a technical mastery of paint\, which combines to create detailed\, thoughtful\, and energetic compositions.

SUMMARY:Before the Masterpieces
DESCRIPTION:An intriguing show of new works along with the sketches\, studies\, reference photos and notes created in preparation for the finished paintings. Studies can help an artist plan composition\, color choices\, light and perspective. More spontaneous than most finished works\, studies can be dynamic\, show the artist’s thought process and often differ greatly from the finally presented paintings. For instance\, Michelangelo’s study for the Libyan Sibyl on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is based on a male model while the finished painting is of a woman. This exhibition gives the viewer a look at the work and experiments that lead to the art we see completed and framed.

SUMMARY:Addison Art Gallery's 25th Summer
DESCRIPTION:Painting demonstrations by Maryalice Eizenberg and Amy Sanders from 10:00 to noon\, Andrea Petitto from noon to 2:00\, and Paul Batch from 3:00 to 4:00. Please join the artists for a toast from 4:00 to 6:00 and treats all day. \n\n\nFor a quarter of a century\, the Addison Art Gallery has been honored to represent emerging and master artists from across the United States\, Canada and France. Addison is the creator of After Hopper\, Before the Masterpieces\, Outermost Inspirations\, Cape Lore and In Thoreau’s Views. The gallery’s reputation for personal service and community support is unmatched.\nAfter Hopper Artists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by his work and the area that this great American painter chose as his home. Creative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. Acknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, “After Hopper” celebrates the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways. The Addison Art Gallery invites the public to “After Hopper” events and exhibitions of work created by contemporary artists inspired by Edward Hopper and Cape Cod.\nIn Thoreau’s Views “Wishing to get a better view than I had yet had of the ocean\, which\, we are told\, covers more than two-thirds of the globe\, but of which a man who lives a few miles inland may never see any trace\, more than of another world\, I made a visit to Cape Cod.” —Henry David Thoreau\n“Best Art Gallery Cape Cod” — Cape Cod Magazine\n“One of the nation’s leading year-round galleries” American Art Collector magazine\n“Only the most riveting of talent“—Insider’s Guide to Cape Cod\nEditor’s Choice Award: Fine Art Gallery—Cape Cod Life\n“One of the most successful galleries in the country” astounding “the public with art by newly discovered artists and masterpieces by established artists.” American Art Collector magazine\n“Housed in a beautiful and quaint old red house\, the gallery’s charming appeal draws visitors from around the world to its doors. Once inside\, the exciting and resplendent artwork beckons collectors to walk slowly through its warm and cozy interior to take in each and every painting along the way. It is no surprise then\, that the Eastern Regional Exhibition was such a huge success.”—Oil Painters of America

SUMMARY:Paul Schulenburg Captures the City
DESCRIPTION:This new exhibition emphasizes Paul Schulenburg’s city scenes. He will be on hand to chat from 10:30 to noon and from 4:30 to 6:00.\nThe city poses unique challenges as well as an array of opportunities for an artist. There is so much brick\, cement\, and pavement. Then something will jump out\, grabbing an observant person’s attention.\n“Just as a trip to the beach can be refreshing\, going from a rural area to the city can jolt the system and make you see the world through fresh eyes. Sometimes I will see things I have never seen before\, things that go unnoticed by hordes of people walking by every day. Stories appear around every corner.” —Paul Schulenburg

SUMMARY:As We See It: McGauley and Eizenberg
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the beaches\, woodlands and gardens of New England and Cape Cod as seen through the eyes of Maryalice Eizenberg and Sharon McGauley. Two accomplished oil painters\, working in different but beautifully complimentary styles\, offer their unique and inspired perspectives on the land and sea made with color and light. \n \n \nMeet the artists on Saturday\, August 21 Maryalice Eizenberg Demonstration 11 to 1; Sharon McGauley Demonstration 1 to 3; Artists’ Reception from 4 to 6. \n \n \nMaryalice Eizenberg is an award-winning artist\, raised surrounded by a family of musicians supportive of her interest in the visual arts. She has been drawing and painting all of her life. She completed coursework at the Worcester and Springfield Fine Arts museums\, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Clark University\, and studied with painters John Cosby\, Donald Demers\, Kim English\, Daniel Keys\, Gregg Kreutz\, Joseph Paquet\, and Charles Sovek. Dramatic patterns of light and color are what attract her most to a subject. It is her emotional response to these elements that she strives to share with the viewer. \n \n \nEizenberg has been featured in Cape Cod Life and Chatham magazines and The Creative Spirit\, Art in Chatham’s Old Village. Her work also appears in Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: People and Places by Deborah Forman. \n \n \nShe teaches at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham\, and is a member of Oil Painters of America\, and Twenty One in Truro. Her work has been shown in museums on and off the Cape. Her work is held in private collections in the United States\, Europe and Japan. \n \n \nArtist’s Statement Realism that excites has a foundation in abstraction of design. A pattern of light that makes form\, saturates color and creates mood holds it together and tells a story. It is the story that is the bond between the artist and the audience. \n \n \nSharon McGauley\, an internationally collected artist\, has earned multiple grants (including the Ann McKee Fund\, several Art Reach Fellowships\, and a Rodel Foundation Fellowship) and a residency at the Espy Foundation in Washington State. She studied art at Connecticut College with Barkley Hendricks and Andrea Wollensak and continues to study and work with master painters. Sharon paints plein air and in her studio. She lives in Portland\, Maine and spends a lot of time in her family home on Cape Cod. \n \n \nHer work has shown in numerous solo and juried shows across the country\, and has been featured in a solo show at the Key West Custom House Museum. McGauley paintings can be found in prestigious collections in the US\, Canada\, Europe and Japan. \n \n \nArtist’s Statement Land and seascape paintings are\, for me\, about capturing a sense of place. The experience of solitude is the starting point; the sense of being alone and engulfed by the landscape is one I frequently seek out. I am especially drawn to places where the sea meets the sky in such a way that you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. I seek out dramatic weather and lighting conditions. I love hazy days when the ocean melts into the sky\, watching a thick fog roll in\, snowstorms\, and experiencing the changes in light when a summer storm comes through. I am always searching for something different in the atmosphere that shifts and changes the mood of a place; it allows me to play with that feeling and recreate it as I paint or push it even further in the studio.

SUMMARY:Andrea Petitto: Body Language
DESCRIPTION:Meet Andrea on Saturday\, August 28 for a reception with demonstration from 4:00 to 6:00 \nAndrea Petitto shares intimate observations creating an uncommon and lively vision of people and animals living their everyday lives. Bold paint strokes express figures within the sun and atmosphere of Cape Cod beaches and markets\, often within exciting abstractions. \n  \n“These paintings have been aptly described as ‘the middles of stories’ where the viewer might sense beginnings and ends from their own experience.” —Andrea Petitto \n \nAndrea Petitto was born in rural Massachusetts where\, in her youth\, she had to choose between art and science. Andrea’s father had been a sculptor and Andrea grew up making things with modeling clay. Instead of the usual children’s literature\, as a small child Andrea was fascinated by the images in large folio books of Rodin and Michelangelo sculptures. These influences can still be seen in the strong sense of solidity and form in her paintings. In 1990\, after a career as university professor and industry consultant\, she moved to art. A course in oil painting in 1997 was a life-changing event. Around the turn of the century Andrea devoted herself to the study of painting and became a full-time artist with a particular passion for the human figure. Her love of dogs and other animals lead her to include animals in her figurative work. Andrea taught art classes at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua NY\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and Creative Arts Center\, Chatham. She has had solo shows in Canandaigua and at the Copley Society in Boston\, and has won many awards in Rochester\, NY\, Boston’s Copley Society\, and at many venues on Cape Cod. Artist’s Statement I have always made some kind of art. As a child\, I created things with clay\, and I have always made drawings of things that I like to look at or just imagine. Later in life I was introduced to oil painting and never looked back. The paint made my drawings come to life. Figural work is my passion because of the evocative nature of body language and form. A level of abstraction in the figure allows the viewer to experience the emotional impact in a universal way\, without concern for a specific identity. Brush or knife strokes are more important to me than representational detail. I like the tension between the sense of paint and surface on one hand and the illusion of form and depth on the other. I try to make my subject matter look like it’s been chiseled from stone and yet alive and breathing\, a contrast that I find beautiful and exciting.

SUMMARY:Life at Land's End: Marc Kundmann
DESCRIPTION:Freedom. Peace. Exploration. Creation. Connection. Life in a land of possibilities and gifts.\n\n  \nMarc will demonstrate painting on the gallery lawn during the artists’ reception from 4:00 to 6:00. (He will also hold open studio hours Friday\, September 10 from noon to 4:00 at 14 Bradford Street\, Provincetown.) \nShowing new work year round \nMarc Kundmann works in encaustic\, oil\, charcoal\, acrylic\, and cold wax allowing him to build and remove layers of color\, transparency\, and pigments\, and to use texture expressively. His hope is that the resulting layers create not only intriguing and beautiful surfaces\, but also give emotional life to the subjects and hint at the mystery inside. Kundmann studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of creating on Cape Cod including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them he learned to explore materials\, freeing himself from the constraints of representing the real world and allowing him to work expressively\, responding to color and composition allowing the painting to evolve into its final form. \n  \nArtist’s statement \nBefore I embarked on my adventure in painting\, I asked an artist I respected for his thoughts on where to begin and how to approach a painting. His best advice: don’t try to paint a feeling or specific emotion. Just paint. The emotional quality will come through. Keeping this in mind\, I began to paint my surroundings\, the wild beaches of Truro in particular\, en plein aire. I studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of painting and art-making on the Cape including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann’s\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them I learned to explore materials\, free myself from the constraints of representing the real world and work in a more expressive way\, responding to color and composition and creating work from both intellect and emotion. I am also particularly influenced by the Bay Area Figurative Movement including painters David Park\, Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn.

SUMMARY:Jonathan McPhillips One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:“Each painting is a problem to solve\, or a puzzle to piece together; a playful\, yet serious endeavor\, and a celebration of our surroundings. There is no greater reward than knowing that a painting has captivated a friend or a stranger. We see many things everyday with heightened digital clarity\, yet original artwork always conveys a sense of mystery and magic for all. I see painting as an unspoken and unwritten way to connect our hearts and minds through depictions of shared experience.” —Jonathan McPhillips \nJonathan McPhillips graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a Cum Laude Distinction in Fine Art. Working equally in the studio and on location\, his work includes the harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and architecture of our coastal marine environment—a celebration of coastal New England. \nRecent accomplishments include multiple awards in juried shows at the Salmagundi Club\, NY\, NY and the achievement of signature status in The American Impressionists Society. Jonathan continues to be invited by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the “Art in Embassies” program which has sent his work to U.S. embassies around the globe

SUMMARY:Endless Views: Paul Batch and Jonathan Earle
DESCRIPTION:Previews at addisonart.com as work is completed and at the Gallery on Friday\, July 29.\n\n \nPaul Batch is a contemporary painter praised for his evocative atmospheric landscapes. His paintings are a poetic response to the fleeting and ephemeral light cast by the passing sun or rising moon. He focuses on transitions\, painting various times of day\, changing weather\, and the rich seasons New England offers.\n\n \nPaul received his BFA and MFA from the Hartford Art School where he studied under the late great Stephen Brown. He is an award-winning member of Oil Painters of America and Portrait Society of America. His work has appeared in numerous publications including the Artist’s Magazine\, International Artist and Fine Art Connoisseur.\n\n\nJonathan Earle was born on Cape Cod in 1971. After graduating from The University of Massachusetts with a degree in landscape architecture\, he spent 20 years in architectural and construction management. As his career path moved him further and further away from expressing his ideas with pencil and paper\, he returned to his true passion\, painting.\n\n \n“Creating a sense of place in the landscape is at the core of landscape architecture. A sense of place is the experience or emotions associated within a familiar setting. It is this principle that I draw upon when painting\, the dimension that is formed by people’s relationship with their physical setting\, whether an actual figure in the painting or the viewer. I aim to capture the emotion and energy of that place. Whether it be the energy of a crowded street or the potential energy of idle traffic at a stoplight\, both evoke emotion and feeling for a place.“

SUMMARY:Olivier Suire Verley One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:Always looking for new lights\, Olivier travels often\, to Italy (Rome\, Venice)\, Vietnam\, Morocco\, Spain\, Egypt\, Mauritius — and he is once again coming to New England. He shows throughout France\, in China\, Japan and\, in the United States\, exclusively at the Addison Art Gallery. His work is featured in multiple books and films. \n  \nArtist’s Statement: My first inspiration remains the human being and its environment\, its connivance; small scenes of life become exceptional if one knows how to pay attention to them. Fleeting lights and movement\, dynamics\, our hesitations that give a meaning to life. \n  \nI love the Addison Art Gallery. The eclecticism of Helen’s choices\, the friendliness of her collector friends\, their loyalty and courage to open themselves to less conventional art forms. I too live on a coast: that of an Atlantic island\, Île de Ré; its charms\, for those who know\, could be confused with those of Cape Cod. Light\, sand dunes\, that “islander” character imposed on us by geography\, that seafarers’ solidarity\, and the endless sky that opens heart and mind. Helen and I have been working together since 2005. I hope this exhibition will be as lively and full of spontaneity as the previous eight!

Robert’s family moved to the Wampanoag homeland of Mashpee when he was ten. Here his father Russell entered a life-long battle to regain land and sovereignty for the Mashpee Wampanoag People. As a child\, Robert witnessed the 1976 Wampanoag Indian land claim\, trial and the tribe’s quest for Federal Recognition. Robert retired from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority after 24 years of service. During this period\, he observed the culture of Boston’s subway system working as a motorman\, union steward and at times a civil rights activist on the MBTA’s Orange Line. He drew pictures\, took notes and made commentary.\n \nThe Native Land Conservancy’s mission is to preserve healthy landscapes for all living things and help restore land back to its original state wherever possible. The Native-run group draws upon collective traditional cultural knowledge as indigenous people with generations of direct experience in the woodlands\, coastlines\, and waterways of New England. They are attending to the important work of protecting sacred spaces\, habitat areas for winged and four legged neighbors\, and other essential ecosystem resources to benefit Mother Earth and all human beings. All land is sacred in their eyes and worthy of special care; thus their reasons and interest in rescuing and preserving ancient ancestral village sites where their ancestors once lived and worked. \nTreats will include a non-alcoholic\, cranberry-based cocktail\, popcorn and walnuts. \nPreviews at Addison Art Gallery and addisonart.com.
