SUMMARY:Paul Schulenburg Captures the City
DESCRIPTION:This new exhibition emphasizes Paul Schulenburg’s city scenes. He will be on hand to chat from 10:30 to noon and from 4:30 to 6:00.\nThe city poses unique challenges as well as an array of opportunities for an artist. There is so much brick\, cement\, and pavement. Then something will jump out\, grabbing an observant person’s attention.\n“Just as a trip to the beach can be refreshing\, going from a rural area to the city can jolt the system and make you see the world through fresh eyes. Sometimes I will see things I have never seen before\, things that go unnoticed by hordes of people walking by every day. Stories appear around every corner.” —Paul Schulenburg

SUMMARY:Addison Art Gallery's 25th Summer
DESCRIPTION:Painting demonstrations by Maryalice Eizenberg and Amy Sanders from 10:00 to noon\, Andrea Petitto from noon to 2:00\, and Paul Batch from 3:00 to 4:00. Please join the artists for a toast from 4:00 to 6:00 and treats all day. \n\n\nFor a quarter of a century\, the Addison Art Gallery has been honored to represent emerging and master artists from across the United States\, Canada and France. Addison is the creator of After Hopper\, Before the Masterpieces\, Outermost Inspirations\, Cape Lore and In Thoreau’s Views. The gallery’s reputation for personal service and community support is unmatched.\nAfter Hopper Artists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by his work and the area that this great American painter chose as his home. Creative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. Acknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, “After Hopper” celebrates the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways. The Addison Art Gallery invites the public to “After Hopper” events and exhibitions of work created by contemporary artists inspired by Edward Hopper and Cape Cod.\nIn Thoreau’s Views “Wishing to get a better view than I had yet had of the ocean\, which\, we are told\, covers more than two-thirds of the globe\, but of which a man who lives a few miles inland may never see any trace\, more than of another world\, I made a visit to Cape Cod.” —Henry David Thoreau\n“Best Art Gallery Cape Cod” — Cape Cod Magazine\n“One of the nation’s leading year-round galleries” American Art Collector magazine\n“Only the most riveting of talent“—Insider’s Guide to Cape Cod\nEditor’s Choice Award: Fine Art Gallery—Cape Cod Life\n“One of the most successful galleries in the country” astounding “the public with art by newly discovered artists and masterpieces by established artists.” American Art Collector magazine\n“Housed in a beautiful and quaint old red house\, the gallery’s charming appeal draws visitors from around the world to its doors. Once inside\, the exciting and resplendent artwork beckons collectors to walk slowly through its warm and cozy interior to take in each and every painting along the way. It is no surprise then\, that the Eastern Regional Exhibition was such a huge success.”—Oil Painters of America

SUMMARY:Jonathan McPhillips One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:“Current Attractions” New paintings celebrating the places and lives we love\, and the summertime connections that last a lifetime.\nJoin Jonathan for a demonstration from 11:00 to 1:00 and a reception from 4:00 to 6:00 \n\n\nJonathan McPhillips graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a Cum Laude Distinction in Fine Art. Jonathan continues to be invited by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the “Art in Embassies” program which has sent his work to U.S. embassies around the globe. \n  \nArtist’s Statement\n“Each painting is a problem to solve\, or a puzzle to piece together; a playful\, yet serious endeavor\, and a celebration of our surroundings. There is no greater reward than knowing that a painting has captivated a friend or a stranger. We see many things everyday with heightened digital clarity\, yet original artwork always conveys a sense of mystery and magic for all. I see painting as an unspoken and unwritten way to connect our hearts and minds through depictions of shared experience.” Jonathan McPhillips

SUMMARY:Before the Masterpieces
DESCRIPTION:An intriguing show of new works along with the sketches\, studies\, reference photos and notes created in preparation for the finished paintings. Studies can help an artist plan composition\, color choices\, light and perspective. More spontaneous than most finished works\, studies can be dynamic\, show the artist’s thought process and often differ greatly from the finally presented paintings. For instance\, Michelangelo’s study for the Libyan Sibyl on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is based on a male model while the finished painting is of a woman. This exhibition gives the viewer a look at the work and experiments that lead to the art we see completed and framed.

SUMMARY:Wild Care Week
DESCRIPTION:Artists from across the Cape and beyond are joining the Addison Art Gallery in support of Wild Care. Spearheaded by artists SaraJane Doberstein and Amy Sanders\, and Helen Addison\, Wild Care Week features new works\, sales of which will benefit Wild Care. Please visit the gallery and preview paintings at addisonart.com. For more information\, email helen@addisonart.com. \nJoin Amy Sanders to discover the secret to building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works toward bringing a painting to life through the building up of multiple layers for a demonstration on the gallery lawn Friday\, July 17 at 11:00. (Masks and physical distance required) Pastel is a unique medium\, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance that is the hallmark of the medium. Questions\, comments and conversation of all things pastel are encouraged. \n\n\nSaraJane’s painting style ranges from traditional representational to contemporary realism\, and her work reflects a fascination with the natural world and its transformations. Whether her subject is a glossy cluster of cherries\, the chipped paint of an antique\, or the colorful jumble of seashells on a beach\, her paintings capture the larger-than-life essence of everyday objects and scenes. Her playful\, whimsical approach to her subjects is balanced by a technical mastery of paint\, which combines to create detailed\, thoughtful\, and energetic compositions.

SUMMARY:Paul Baldassini Virtual One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:Paul Baldassini’s meticulously rendered oil paintings present a depth beyond two dimensions\, integral knowledge of botany\, and amazing beauty beyond what is normally seen by the human eye. \nThe Addison Art Gallery is pleased to virtually present his 2020 One Man Show and\, for every work purchased June 22 through June 28\, will make a donation to the Joe Andruzzi Foundation. The Joe Andruzzi Foundation is committed to providing help\, hope\, and a reason to smile\, for New England cancer patients and their families by contributing financial support when it is needed most. \nBaldassini’s stunning masterworks can be see at https://addisonart.com/paul-baldassini/ . For more information or to reserve work\, please email helen@addisonart.com. \nVideos featuring Paul at work and commenting on his paintings can be seen here https://addisonart.com/paul-baldassini/videos/ \nAs a professional designer\, photographer\, and digital image editor\, Paul Baldassini owned and managed Paul Baldassini Graphic Design for over 25 years in Boston’s Back Bay where his creative team provided graphic design and advertising services to a diverse range of clients including corporate\, private and non-profit organizations. Paul has a reputation for producing quality products through a combination of originality in design and composition\, materials and technical competence that have earned him representation and commendations in esteemed settings and publications. Paul has a BFA in Illustration/Graphic Arts from Massachusetts College of Art\, Boston and is a Signature Member of the New England Watercolor Society\, (NEWS). A native of Quincy\, Massachusetts\, Paul\, his wife and daughter reside in Middletown\, Connecticut. \nHaving had some traditional training\, Paul considers himself a self-taught painter due to his total immersion into a highly self-motivated learning process outside the realm of formal instruction — for the most part\, self-taught. Through his dedicated study of 16th and 17th century master painters\, combined with his vast knowledge of modern painting techniques and digital tools\, Paul attends to details that give his paintings a mannered\, but nonetheless\, arresting quality. His technique is very similar to that of the old masters — a structured approach that utilizes a monochrome underpainting with direct overpainting\, minimal glazing and scumbling and the use of a special medium. \nPaul’s sketchbook is a digital camera with a macro lens which he uses to create compelling compositions that combine rhythm & repetition with light and shadow effects. The tripartite nature of the process — the object itself\, the photograph of the object\, and the translation of both into a painting — goes beyond the mere copying of a static reference. Although Paul paints flowers\, its the adverbs and adjectives used to describe them that are the subjects of his paintings. “I continue to be awed by the mathematics of repeating patterns underlying their beauty. Their color and variety command my attention while the blossoming of a flower triggers the sense that something miraculous is coming.” \nThe paintings Paul creates are based on a composite of many images. Like much great art\, they are a combination of fact and fiction. As a digital image editor for most of his professional career of more than 40 years\, Paul now uses digital technology to examine and edit\, larger than life\, the flowers he photographs. Whereas a still life painter seeks to capture an impression of a fleeting moment of light and time\, Paul methodically seeks to reveal the intricacy and elegance of their design. He spends hours exploring the design possibilities before putting brush to canvas. Throughout the process\, and especially when photographing his reference images\, Paul appreciates moments of inspiration\, and later\, seeing his works hung on the gallery wall — the actual painting being mostly just hard work and technical competence.

SUMMARY:Welcoming Summer Virtually with Andrea Petitto’s Show
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for Andrea Petitto’s One Woman Show and new works by gallery artists as we celebrate the start of Summer 2020. \nTo see Andrea’s full 2020 show\, please visit https://addisonart.com/andrea-petitto/\nShipping and handling is free within the continental U.S. For a quick response to requests for more information and requests\, please email helen@addisonart.com. Thank you. \nTo step inside her studio\, please visit Andrea’s YouTube Playlist. \nTo see more about all of our artists’ activities and work\, please visit the Addison Art Gallery YouTube Channel. \nFor every Petitto painting purchased this through May 24\, we will make a donation to the Family Pantry of Cape Cod. \nAndrea Petitto was born in rural Massachusetts where\, in her youth\, she had to choose between art and science. Andrea’s father had been a sculptor and Andrea grew up making things with modeling clay. Instead of the usual children’s literature\, as a small child\, Andrea was fascinated by the images in large folio books of Rodin and Michelangelo sculptures. These influences can still be seen in the strong sense of solidity and form in her paintings. In 1990\, after a career as a university professor and industry consultant\, she moved to art. A course in oil painting in 1997 was a life-changing event. \nAround the turn of the century\, Andrea devoted herself to the study of painting and became a full-time artist with a particular passion for the human figure. Her love of dogs and other animals lead her to include animals in her figurative work. \nAndrea taught art classes at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua NY\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and Creative Arts Center\, Chatham. She has had solo shows in Canandaigua and at the Copley Society in Boston\, and has won many awards in Rochester\, NY\, Boston’s Copley Society\, and at many venues on Cape Cod. \nArtist’s Statement\nI have always made some kind of art. As a child\, I created things with clay\, and I have always made drawings of things that I like to look at or just imagine. Later in life I was introduced to oil painting and never looked back. The paint made my drawings come to life. \nFigural work is my passion because of the evocative nature of body language and form. A level of abstraction in the figure allows the viewer to experience the emotional impact in a universal way\, without concern for a specific identity. Brush or knife strokes are more important to me than representational detail. I like the tension between the sense of paint and surface on one hand and the illusion of form and depth on the other. I try to make my subject matter look like it’s been chiseled from stone and yet alive and breathing\, a contrast that I find beautiful and exciting.

SUMMARY:In Thoreau's Views Plein Air Painting\, Show and Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Wishing to get a better view than I had yet had of the ocean\, which\, we are told\, covers more than two-thirds of the globe\, but of which a man who lives a few miles inland may never see any trace\, more than of another world\, I made a visit to Cape Cod.” — Henry David Thoreau \nArtists’ reception and exhibit\, at the beautiful Eastham Public Library\, featuring scenes immortalized by Henry David Thoreau and cherished by us today. \nIn addition to meeting contemporary artists\, the public is invited to join us in a step back to the mid-1800s and meet Henry David Thoreau (portrayed by historian Richard Smith) and a chat about his visits to Cape Cod. For more than 20 years\, Smith has “become” Thoreau\, dressing in meticulous 19th-century regalia\, sounding philosophical and looking as pensive as Henry. He has been featured on C-Span’s “American Writers” series\, BostonTV5’s “Chronicle”\, and traveled the country presenting Thoreau’s essays for libraries\, historical societies and schools. \nExhibit hanging all month.

SUMMARY:Abele and Eizenberg: Our Illuminated Landscape
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join Robert Abele and Maryalice Eizenberg for demonstrations from 4 to 4:45\, reception 5 to 7\, and an exhibition of new work capturing light-filled scenes from the shore\, gardens\, and towns of Cape Cod. \nMaryalice will reference a plein air study for a larger studio piece\, demonstrating a detailed underpainting start with possibilities for changes in composition. During application of heavier pigment she will discuss brush and color choices influencing emotional response. \nRobert Abele will discuss his use of the limited palette and how he strives for simplicity in his work\, demonstrating his process (refined over 30 years) working directly in oils applying paint in the alla prima technique completing his canvas in one session. Robert’s use of cold wax medium resulting in luscious impasto brush strokes on the canvas will also be covered.

SUMMARY:After Hopper 2019
DESCRIPTION:Artists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by his work and the area that this great American painter chose as his home. Creative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. \nAcknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, “After Hopper” celebrates the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways. \nWe will start with an oil painting demonstration by Maryalice Eizenberg at 4:00; the reception will run until 7:00. Eizenberg’s demonstration painting will be based on a building with architectural elements reminiscent of Hopper’s “Cape Cod Evening”. It has been unoccupied for many years and has that lonely feel often found in Hopper’s work. (Sadly\, it is scheduled for demolition in September.) \nWe hope you can join us.

SUMMARY:Olivier Suire Verley One Man Show Reception
DESCRIPTION:Always looking for new lights\, Olivier travels often\, to Italy (Rome\, Venice)\, Morocco\, Spain\, Egypt\, Mauritius\, etc. He shows throughout France\, in China\, Japan and\, in the United States\, exclusively at the Addison Art Gallery. His work is featured multiple books and films. \nArtist’s Statement \nHelen and I have been working together since 2005. I hope this exhibition will be as lively and full of spontaneity as the previous seven! \nMy first inspiration remains the human being and its environment\, its connivance; small scenes of life become exceptional if one knows how to pay attention to them. Fleeting lights and movement\, dynamics\, our hesitations that give a meaning to life. \nI love Helen Addison’s Gallery. The eclecticism of Helen’s choices\, the friendliness of her collector friends\, their loyalty and courage to open themselves to less conventional art forms. I too live on a coast: that of an Atlantic island\, Île de Ré; its charms\, for those who know\, could be confused with those of Cape Cod. Light\, sand dunes\, that “islander” character imposed on us by geography\, that seafarers’ solidarity\, and the endless sky that opens heart and mind. \n“When one imagines Olivier’s paintings\, it immediately brings to mind the true meaning of the French phrase\, “joie de vivre.” Spanning the world from Morocco to Rome\, Egypt to Venice\, Mr. Verley’s works inspire and capture the essence of his subjects\, be it horses and their Moroccan riders going full gallop across the plains or a farmer captured in a field of ruby drenched poppies. His paintings have the capacity to energize and evoke feelings of desiring to be there…in that place\, experiencing all the possibilities of life.” — Tom and Trish O’Connor \nJust prior to this reception the French Cable Station Museum (next door at 41 South Orleans Road) invites the public to toast Olivier Suire Verley at 4:00 pm. \n\nThe French Cable Station\, built in 1891\, was the American termination point for a telegraph cable that came directly to Cape Cod from France. It remained in operation until 1959 except for a few years (1940 to 1952) during WWII when it was closed for security reasons. News of the stock market crash and Charles Lindberg’s trans-Atlantic flight\, were among the many important messages sent over decades. The station was purchased in 1972 from France by a committee of prominent — and generous — Orleans citizens.

SUMMARY:Jonathan Earle: Emerging Artist One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Earle was born on Cape Cod in 1971. After graduating from The University of Massachusetts with a degree in landscape architecture\, he spent 20 years in architectural and construction management. As his career path moved him further and further away from expressing his ideas with pencil and paper\, he returned to his true passion\, painting. \n“Creating a sense of place in the landscape is at the core of landscape architecture. A sense of place is the experience or emotions associated within a familiar setting. It is this principle that I draw upon when painting\, the dimension that is formed by people’s relationship with their physical setting\, whether an actual figure in the painting or the viewer. I aim to capture the emotion and energy of that place. Whether it be the energy of a crowded street or the potential energy of idle traffic at a stoplight\, both evoke emotion and feeling for a place.” \nJonathan is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association\, where his work has received numerous Best in Show awards\, and The Arnold Coleman Award. His works have also received top awards from various other art organizations. Jonathan lives in Sandwich with his wife and two children.

SUMMARY:Marc Kundmann One Man Show Reception
DESCRIPTION:Marc Kundmann works in encaustic and acrylic media. Both allow him to build and remove layers of color\, transparency\, and pigments\, and to use texture expressively. His hope is that the resulting layers create not only intriguing and beautiful surfaces\, but also give emotional life to the subjects and hint at the mystery inside. \nFrom 3:00 to 4:00\, Marc will demonstrate how he creates starting with a spark of an idea and using a variety of media. He’ll begin with a base of charcoal and acrylic\, adding wax and oil for depth\, building the layers of color and texture for which his work is known. \nThe Opening Reception for his One Man Show will run from 5:00 to 7:00. \nKundmann studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of creating on Cape Cod including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them he learned to explore materials\, freeing himself from the constraints of representing the real world and allowing him to work expressively\, responding to color and composition allowing the painting to evolve into its final form.

SUMMARY:Jonathan McPhillips One Man Show Reception and Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonathan McPhillips from 3 to 4 as he demonstrates his process for creating a coastal painting. Using sketches\, plein air studies\, photo editing tools\, and memory\, he will create a painting with a unique style that elevates the source material to a higher level of visual attention and painterly expression. \nThen chat with him at his reception from 5 to 7. \nJonathan graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a Cum Laude Distinction in Fine Art. Jonathan’s artwork has evolved into a celebration of coastal New England. Working equally in the studio and on location\, his work includes the harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and architecture of our coastal marine environment. \nRecent accomplishments include three awards in three juried shows at the Salmagundi Club\, NY\, NY\, in 2018. Jonathan also received signature status in The American Impressionists Society in 2018. He held several workshops last year including locations in Watch Hill\, RI and Hilton Head\, SC. Jonathan also continues to be invited by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the “Art in Embassies” program which has sent his work to U.S. embassies around the globe. \n“Creating art has been a constant in my life. After collegiate studies in modern techniques with traditional influences\, I have found my focus in “contemporary impressionism”\, a form of realism and painterly expression. For me\, each painting is a problem to solve\, or a puzzle to piece together…a playful\, yet serious endeavor\, and a celebration of our environment. There is no greater reward than knowing that a painting has somehow captivated a friend or a stranger. Whether the emotion I evoke leads to a purchase\, a new workshop participant\, or just an extended pause on a gallery browse\, it is truly inspiring to know that my interpretations on canvas can be a positive force for others. Maybe that is why I paint. In a world of global connectivity and digital clarity\, painting retains a sense of mystery for us all…a bit of magic…unspoken and unwritten threads connecting our hearts and minds. Through my paintings and instruction\, I intend to connect as many threads as I can\, for as long as I can.”

SUMMARY:On the Bright Side: Cynthia Reid and Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:In Cynthia Reid’s upcoming summer show\, “On the Bright Side\,” color\, shape\, and texture are key elements in her oil paintings. Reid’s bird portraits\, florals\, bird nests\, cottages\, landscapes\, and garden vignettes provide a contemporary take on traditional subject matter. In painting her flowers and birds\, she takes a whimsical approach and uses a sunny palette of colors. “These paintings are intended to evoke joy and portray the inherent beauty of the natural world\,” says Reid.\n\n\nWe will also be showing plein air works created that day during the Orleans Garden Tour.
