SUMMARY:Life at Land's End: Marc Kundmann
DESCRIPTION:Freedom. Peace. Exploration. Creation. Connection. Life in a land of possibilities and gifts.\n\n  \nMarc will demonstrate painting on the gallery lawn during the artists’ reception from 4:00 to 6:00. (He will also hold open studio hours Friday\, September 10 from noon to 4:00 at 14 Bradford Street\, Provincetown.) \nShowing new work year round \nMarc Kundmann works in encaustic\, oil\, charcoal\, acrylic\, and cold wax allowing him to build and remove layers of color\, transparency\, and pigments\, and to use texture expressively. His hope is that the resulting layers create not only intriguing and beautiful surfaces\, but also give emotional life to the subjects and hint at the mystery inside. Kundmann studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of creating on Cape Cod including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them he learned to explore materials\, freeing himself from the constraints of representing the real world and allowing him to work expressively\, responding to color and composition allowing the painting to evolve into its final form. \n  \nArtist’s statement \nBefore I embarked on my adventure in painting\, I asked an artist I respected for his thoughts on where to begin and how to approach a painting. His best advice: don’t try to paint a feeling or specific emotion. Just paint. The emotional quality will come through. Keeping this in mind\, I began to paint my surroundings\, the wild beaches of Truro in particular\, en plein aire. I studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of painting and art-making on the Cape including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann’s\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them I learned to explore materials\, free myself from the constraints of representing the real world and work in a more expressive way\, responding to color and composition and creating work from both intellect and emotion. I am also particularly influenced by the Bay Area Figurative Movement including painters David Park\, Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn.

SUMMARY:Jonathan McPhillips One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:“Each painting is a problem to solve\, or a puzzle to piece together; a playful\, yet serious endeavor\, and a celebration of our surroundings. There is no greater reward than knowing that a painting has captivated a friend or a stranger. We see many things everyday with heightened digital clarity\, yet original artwork always conveys a sense of mystery and magic for all. I see painting as an unspoken and unwritten way to connect our hearts and minds through depictions of shared experience.” —Jonathan McPhillips \nJonathan McPhillips graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a Cum Laude Distinction in Fine Art. Working equally in the studio and on location\, his work includes the harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and architecture of our coastal marine environment—a celebration of coastal New England. \nRecent accomplishments include multiple awards in juried shows at the Salmagundi Club\, NY\, NY and the achievement of signature status in The American Impressionists Society. Jonathan continues to be invited by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the “Art in Embassies” program which has sent his work to U.S. embassies around the globe

SUMMARY:Endless Views: Paul Batch and Jonathan Earle
DESCRIPTION:Previews at addisonart.com as work is completed and at the Gallery on Friday\, July 29.\n\n \nPaul Batch is a contemporary painter praised for his evocative atmospheric landscapes. His paintings are a poetic response to the fleeting and ephemeral light cast by the passing sun or rising moon. He focuses on transitions\, painting various times of day\, changing weather\, and the rich seasons New England offers.\n\n \nPaul received his BFA and MFA from the Hartford Art School where he studied under the late great Stephen Brown. He is an award-winning member of Oil Painters of America and Portrait Society of America. His work has appeared in numerous publications including the Artist’s Magazine\, International Artist and Fine Art Connoisseur.\n\n\nJonathan Earle was born on Cape Cod in 1971. After graduating from The University of Massachusetts with a degree in landscape architecture\, he spent 20 years in architectural and construction management. As his career path moved him further and further away from expressing his ideas with pencil and paper\, he returned to his true passion\, painting.\n\n \n“Creating a sense of place in the landscape is at the core of landscape architecture. A sense of place is the experience or emotions associated within a familiar setting. It is this principle that I draw upon when painting\, the dimension that is formed by people’s relationship with their physical setting\, whether an actual figure in the painting or the viewer. I aim to capture the emotion and energy of that place. Whether it be the energy of a crowded street or the potential energy of idle traffic at a stoplight\, both evoke emotion and feeling for a place.“

SUMMARY:Olivier Suire Verley One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:Always looking for new lights\, Olivier travels often\, to Italy (Rome\, Venice)\, Vietnam\, Morocco\, Spain\, Egypt\, Mauritius — and he is once again coming to New England. He shows throughout France\, in China\, Japan and\, in the United States\, exclusively at the Addison Art Gallery. His work is featured in multiple books and films. \n  \nArtist’s Statement: My first inspiration remains the human being and its environment\, its connivance; small scenes of life become exceptional if one knows how to pay attention to them. Fleeting lights and movement\, dynamics\, our hesitations that give a meaning to life. \n  \nI love the Addison Art Gallery. The eclecticism of Helen’s choices\, the friendliness of her collector friends\, their loyalty and courage to open themselves to less conventional art forms. I too live on a coast: that of an Atlantic island\, Île de Ré; its charms\, for those who know\, could be confused with those of Cape Cod. Light\, sand dunes\, that “islander” character imposed on us by geography\, that seafarers’ solidarity\, and the endless sky that opens heart and mind. Helen and I have been working together since 2005. I hope this exhibition will be as lively and full of spontaneity as the previous eight!

SUMMARY:After Hopper
DESCRIPTION:Artists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Join artists and friends at a reception featuring artists influenced by Hopper and the places he painted. Creative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. \nAcknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, I initiated “After Hopper” to celebrate the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways. \nPreviews at the Addison Art Gallery and addisonart.com.

SUMMARY:Stories on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Previews Friday\, August 19An exhibition of new works by Maryalice Eizenberg and Andrea Petitto demonstrating how accomplished artists capture the life around us. Figures at markets and strolling the landscape\, classic homesteads and cultivated gardens\, each subject and setting imbued with color\, captured patterns and natural light. \nMaryalice Eizenberg is an award-winning artist\, raised surrounded by a family of musicians supportive of her interest in the visual arts. She has been drawing and painting all of her life. She completed coursework at the Worcester and Springfield Fine Arts museums\, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Clark University\, and studied with painters John Cosby\, Donald Demers\, Kim English\,Daniel Keys\, Gregg Kreutz\, Joseph Paquet\, and Charles Sovek. Dramatic patterns of light and color are what attract her most to a subject. It is her emotional response to these elements that she strives to share with the viewer. \nEizenberg has been featured in Cape Cod Life and Chatham magazines and “The Creative Spirit\, Art in Chatham’s Old Village.” Her work also appears in Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: People and Places by Deborah Forman. \nShe teaches at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham\, and is a member of Oil Painters of America\, and Twenty One in Truro. Her work has been shown in museums on and off the Cape. Her work is held in private collections in the United States\, Europe and Japan. \nAndrea Petitto was born in rural Massachusetts where\, in her youth\, she had to choose between art and science. Andrea’s father had been a sculptor and Andrea grew up making things with modeling clay. Instead of the usual children’s literature\, as a small child Andrea was fascinated by the images in large folio books of Rodin and Michelangelo sculptures. These influences can still be seen in the strong sense of solidity and form in her paintings. In 1990\, after a career as university professor and industry consultant\, she moved to art. A course in oil painting in 1997 was a life-changing event.Around the turn of the century Andrea devoted herself to the study of painting and became a full-time artist with a particular passion for the human figure. Her love of dogs and other animals lead her to include animals in her figurative work. \nAndrea taught art classes at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua NY\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and Creative Arts Center\, Chatham. She has had solo shows in Canandaigua and at the Copley Society in Boston\, and has won many awards in Rochester\, NY\, Boston’s Copley Society\, and at many venues on Cape Cod.

DESCRIPTION:Major works created by Native Americans\, “Wampanoag Art for the Ages” and children’s book signings\, cards\, small gifts\, works inspired by indigenous philosophies\, live flute music\, traditional beverages and treats. \n“Wampanoag Art for the Ages” was vetted by three tribal elders. Author Lee Roscoe\, a journalist\, environmental educator and activist\, was privileged to have unique access to artists and tribal leaders. The book starts in the wetu (a domed hut dwelling)\, and looks at pottery\, wampum\, clothing\, adornment\, matting\, twining\, painting and more with some of the foremost Wampanoag creators. \n  \nArtist and MusicianEj Mills Brennan is a multi-media Mashpee Wampanoag Artist\, Musician\, and Educator with a firm belief in the healing power of the arts. In addition to showing her works in gouache acrylics\, and an amazing woven piece\, Emma will play her flute. Emma has produced two independent CDs\, Breath of Prayers II\, a collection of Solo Native American Flute\, and Breath of Prayers III\, Original Compositions: Piano\, Flutes and Vocal. She earned a Masters in Education at Cambridge College\, a Bachelors in Music at UMASS Dartmouth\, an Associates in Science\, Jazz and Contemporary Music\, UMaine Augusta\, and additional coursework at Berkeley College of Music and Portland School of Art.\n \n \nArtistRobert Peters is a Mashpee Wampanoag artist\, poet and author. Robert’s family moved to the Wampanoag homeland of Mashpee when he was ten. Here his father Russell entered a life-long battle to regain land and sovereignty for the Mashpee Wampanoag People. As a child\, Robert witnessed the 1976 Wampanoag Indian land claim\, trial and the tribe’s quest for Federal Recognition. Robert retired from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority after 24 years of service. During this period\, he observed the culture of Boston’s subway system working as a motorman\, union steward and at times a civil rights activist on the MBTA’s Orange Line. He drew pictures\, took notes and made commentary.\n \nThe Native Land Conservancy’s mission is to preserve healthy landscapes for all living things and help restore land back to its original state wherever possible. The Native-run group draws upon collective traditional cultural knowledge as indigenous people with generations of direct experience in the woodlands\, coastlines\, and waterways of New England. They are attending to the important work of protecting sacred spaces\, habitat areas for winged and four legged neighbors\, and other essential ecosystem resources to benefit Mother Earth and all human beings. All land is sacred in their eyes and worthy of special care; thus their reasons and interest in rescuing and preserving ancient ancestral village sites where their ancestors once lived and worked. \nTreats will include a non-alcoholic\, cranberry-based cocktail\, popcorn and walnuts. \nPreviews at Addison Art Gallery and addisonart.com.

SUMMARY:Beyond Bohemia
DESCRIPTION:Honoring those who came before us and treasuring our environment\, “Beyond Bohemia” celebrates Outer Cape history and artists creating today. We hope you can join artists and friends for this reception and intriguing exhibition.\n\n“America’s bohemian movement was both more inclusive as to one’s class\, religious adherence\, or ethnicity and more directed to establishing a new ‘American’ definition of democratic socialism and an ‘American’ voice and style in literature\, theater\, and painting. These would be unique because by 1900 America was the only great nation without a state religion and already had the most polyglot population.” —John Taylor Williams in The Shores of Bohemia\, A Cape Cod Story\, 1910-1960

SUMMARY:Art and Artists to Benefit Cape Cod Foster Childen
DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join us for an art show and reception to benefit the Cape Cod Foster Closet. We’ll toast to this most worthy organization\, see award-winning artists and painting instructor Maryalice Eizenberg demonstrate oil painting\, and enjoy the song stylings of the ever-popular Sarah Burrill. \n \nChildren frequently enter the foster care system with no belongings\, or with a trash bag containing just a few clothing items. Babies often arrive with no diapers\, bottles\, or formula. This is a great challenge for foster parents who need to provide necessities. \n \nThe Cape Cod Foster Closet provides clothing\, shoes\, toys\, books\, baby equipment (including formula and car seats) and furniture for all ages. Cape Cod Foster Closet also provides a new duffel bag or backpack for each child so that they never have to carry their belongings in a trash bag again. All items are donated by our generous community and provided free to families who care for other people’s children.
