His paintings are a poetic response to the fleeting and ephemeral light cast by the passing sun or rising moon. He focuses on transitions\, painting various times of day\, changing weather\, and the rich seasons New England offers. \n“My work reflects the tone and qualities offered by nature. I strive to convey a felt experience through my art. Though most of my work is representational\, I keep myself open to embracing the more abstract elements of each individual scene.” \nPaul received his BFA and MFA from the Hartford Art School where he studied under the late great Stephen Brown. He is an award-winning member of Oil Painters of America and Portrait Society of America. His work has appeared in numerous publications including the Artist’s Magazine\, International Artist and Fine Art Connoisseur. \nMusic by the lovely and lively Sarah Burrill.

The featured exhibition includes works by some of the Cape’s most sought-after artists along plein air pieces created that day. Respected painter and instructor Maryalice Eizenberg with demonstrate oil painting\, and master pastelist Amy Sanders will demonstrate her techniques\, from 5:00 to 6:00. \nMary McDermott\, a 13th-generation Cape Codder\, will be signing her books Salt in the Veins and Old Orleans: Memories of a Cape Cod Town. Jeff Norgeot will be signing Through My Eyes\, a book of poetry inspired by his life along the woods and shorelines of the lower Cape. \nMusic will be supplied by Natalia Bonfini. Natalia was a top 50 finalist on American Idol’s 20th season. Reinventing popular covers\, Natalia mashes up genres from soul to classic rock and back to her blues roots. She has a sound reminiscent of Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin\, and commanding lyrics such as those of Alanis Morissette.

DESCRIPTION:During the opening reception for Truro Treasures 2023\, Addison Art Gallery and Truro Center for the Arts will present artists painting en plein air at beautiful Edgewood Farms. It is suggested that you arrive early (sunset will be at about 7:00). Carpooling is strongly advised. \nPlein air\, French for “open air\,” is used to describe paintings created outdoors. In Italian\, the term would be alfresco. In the 1870s\, the growth of plein air painting flourished with the introduction of paints in tubes. (Previously\, painters made their own paints by grinding and mixing dry pigments with linseed oil.) French Impressionists\, including Claude Monet\, Edouard Manet\, Edouard Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir\, advocated en plein air painting. Charles Webster Hawthorne\, who is attributed with starting the art colony in Provincetown\, came to Cape Cod to teach painting en plein air. \n“With plein air painting\, the eye perceives light and shadows from direct observation. Painting from memory is a challenge; you cannot possibly remember the nuances of reality. Photography can flatten space and distort perspective and color—while being helpful in the studio\, nothing substitutes for being there.” —Paul Schulenburg

Pastel is a unique medium\, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. Beston (1888-1968) wrote the book after spending a solitary “year” in a 20×16 house on the dunes of Eastham on Cape Cod\, studying and observing the wonders of the elements in this stunning setting. Plein air painting in the morning\, talk\, book signing and reception in the afternoon. \nThe Outermost House is considered one of the seminal works of today’s environmental movements and is one of the reasons that the Cape Cod National Seashore exists today. Rachel Carson said it was the only book that ever influenced her writing.
