For more than 20 years\, Smith has “become” Thoreau\, dressing in meticulous 19th-century regalia\, sounding philosophical and looking as pensive as Henry. He has been featured on C-Span’s “American Writers” series\, BostonTV5’s “Chronicle”\, and traveled the country presenting Thoreau’s essays for libraries\, historical societies and schools. \nExhibit hanging all month.

SUMMARY:Celebrate our Waters Artists’ Reception\, Demonstration and Book Signings
DESCRIPTION:Amy Sanders will demonstrate building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works towards bringing a painting to life through multiple layers. Pastel particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance. Questions and comments from audience member of all ages will be encouraged and add to the event. \nSandy Macfarlane will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of her latest book\, Swirling Currents.\nDuring one remarkable day early in 2017\, more than two hundred highly endangered North Atlantic right whales\, nearly half of the entire world’s population\, were seen in Cape Cod Bay. Swirling Currents tells the stories behind the headlines highlighting how a local event is often part of a much larger picture. Whales; sharks chasing seals chasing fish; turtles stranding; functionally extinct oysters and aquaculture filling the gap; the Gulf of Maine heating swiftly and the Gulf Stream slowing down — all happening in the global context of dynamic coastal change. \nSusan Baur will be signing A Guide to the Best Ponds on Cape Cod and the Best Ways of Preserving Them. The aim of the Guide is to teach readers how the pond ecosystems on Cape Cod work and encourage them to treat ponds with care. With this guide you can find hidden jewels\, learn what every pond needs to stay healthy\, and leave those you visit cleaner than you found them. \nBaur lived in Chatham from 2003 to 2009 where she switched from swimming in salt water to fresh. Soon she became intrigued by the painted turtles\, stinkpot or musk turtles\, and enormous snapping turtles that she encountered in local ponds from Orleans to Harwich. She started an illustrated journal and made an entry for every one of the 60-plus swims she took each summer\, noting each turtle she encountered. Drawing maps of several ponds\, she marked exactly where she saw each one. Eventually she was able to identify about a dozen turtles by sight. Next she bought a couple of wet suits and extended her turtle-watching season to a full five months. \nHeidi Clemmer and Marisa Picariello will be presenting the Cape Cod Eco-Tales book series. Author Heidi Clemmer was an educator at Wellfleet Elementary School for 21 years. Cape Cod Eco-Tales is the result of a passion for the varied and significant eco-systems that dominate the Outer Cape Cod landscape. Illustrator Marisa Picariello is a Wellfleet resident who studied art at Wheaton College. Beston (1888-1968) wrote the book after spending a solitary “year” in a 20×16 house on the dunes of Eastham on Cape Cod\, studying and observing the wonders of the elements in this stunning setting. Plein air painting in the morning\, talk\, book signing and reception in the afternoon. \nThe Outermost House is considered one of the seminal works of today’s environmental movements and is one of the reasons that the Cape Cod National Seashore exists today. Rachel Carson said it was the only book that ever influenced her writing.

SUMMARY:Andrea Petitto Plein Air Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is a course for oil or acrylic painters. The course will focus on finding a strong composition in an outdoor landscape and how to orchestrate values and colors to create a compelling painting. Although Andrea paints primarily with palette knife\, painters can use brushes or knives as they wish. Anyone who is interested in trying palette knife painting might find this a good opportunity for a new experience\, but the essentials of the instruction are the same for either tool. Students will create small and larger pieces. Beginning with very small supports (e.g. 5 x 7” or 6 x 8”) will help students focus on the big shapes and edit out detail. This approach can then be used on a larger piece (8 x 10” or 9 x 12” or larger). A short demonstration by the instructor will begin each phase of the workshop.\n•Participants will learn about using oil paints to create beautiful landscape paintings of the HMG grounds\, focusing on the hydrangeas and daylilies as this is their peak bloom time\n•Morning and afternoon sessions will be in different gardens around the property based on where the blooms are best\n•Students will learn about proper values\, capturing light and shade\, color mixing\, perspective\, compositional structure\, and proper use of materials\n•Lunch break on own for participants (Magnolia Café will be open for purchasing lunch or participants may bring their own)\n•5 students minimum\, 15 students maximum\n•Participants are required to being their own materials\, a supply list will be provided upon registration\nThe deadline to register is Tuesday\, July 18.
