DESCRIPTION:For details on this special event and reservations\, please email helen@addisonart.com or call 508.255.6200. Thank you. \n“For my 2024 American exhibition\, I retraced my intimacy with nature and\, in particular\, with trees. The Covid period was conducive to new inspirations. There are expanses of swamps and forests around me which have been my model and\, of course\, the sea which caresses my island. It is the power and the architecture\, the movement\, the wind in the trees\, of the conifers\, which are the basis of much of my work. This does not exclude the human presence which is so dear to me. The use of blue evokes for me sobriety\, inner peace\, renewal\, oxygen\, maturity\, light.” —Olivier Suire Verley

SUMMARY:Olivier Suire Verley Returns!
DESCRIPTION:“For my 2024 American exhibition\, I retraced my intimacy with nature and\, in particular\, with trees. The use of blue evokes for me sobriety\, inner peace\, renewal\, oxygen\, maturity\, light.” \nOlivier Suire Verley was born October 2\, 1952 in La Rochelle (on the Atlantic coast of France\, a historic site of religious war between Protestants and Roman Catholics in the XVIIth century) to a family of artists. His grandfather Louis Suire was a renowned painter (Olivier added his mother’s maiden name\, Verley to his father’s name so as not to be confused with his grandfather\, whom he cherished and admired) and his father Claude (now retired) was a publisher of art books and is an amateur painter himself. \nOlivier studied in La Rochelle first\, then in Tours with Jean Abadie. Moving to Paris\, he also studied etching with Pierre Gandon\, Albert Decaris and Caillevaert Brun. Of a surrealistic tendency\, the themes of his paintings of the time were based upon evasion from reality\, fantastic travels and the sea. During that period\, the colors in his palette were dark and melancholic. He illustrated texts by Cliford Simac and Asimov for the publisher Louis Pauwels. \n1982 marked a profound change in Olivier’s inspiration: as by a refining process\, it turned to become a quest for the essentiality in life\, leading the artist to discover the salutary power of color. From that time onwards\, his themes also changed; landscapes\, still lifes\, portraits and again\, the ever-present sea — the sea of Île de Ré — a small island off La Rochelle. He left Paris definitively and settled on that island\, where he lives and works today. \nSince then\, his inspiration has drawn first from the colors of the holiday season in Île de Ré and on the Atlantic coast of France; then from those of Paris streets in winter or at night\, and more recently from the light of Morocco and Spain. Today\, Olivier seeks to meditate again on evasion\, the elsewhere of our dreams\, of our regrets sometimes\, and of our hopes forever. \nAlways looking for new lights\, Olivier travels often: Italy (Rome\, Venice)\, Japan\, China\, Morocco\, Spain\, Egypt\, Mauritius\, Cambodia\, Vietnam\, Laos\, etc. \nHe shows throughout France\, Spain\, in China\, Japan and\, in the United States\, exclusively at the Addison Art Gallery. His work is featured multiple books and films. \nMusic by Fred Fried. Acclaimed for his pianistic style\, harmonic depth and originality\, 8-string master Fried is among the best of today’s modern jazz guitarists.

He focuses on transitions\, painting various times of day\, changing weather\, and the rich seasons New England offers. \n“My work reflects the tone and qualities offered by nature. I strive to convey a felt experience through my art. He is an award-winning member of Oil Painters of America and Portrait Society of America. His work has appeared in numerous publications including the Artist’s Magazine\, International Artist and Fine Art Connoisseur. \nMusic by the lovely and lively Sarah Burrill.

SUMMARY:Beyond Bohemia Talk and Slide Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Mary Jane Treacy\, professor emerita of modern languages and literatures at Simmons University\, will tie the Cape’s Bohemians back to their days in Greenwich Village and to contemporary painters and their works. \nSince 2005 she has been involved with Reacting to the Past\, a national group of scholars writing interactive role-playing simulations for university history and political science courses. Her work with Reacting took her to New York\, literally as well as intellectually\, leading her to write Greenwich Village 1913: Suffrage\, Labor\, and the New Woman\, now in a second edition\, Paterson (New Jersey\, but just seventeen miles away) 1913: A Strike in the Progressive Era\, and Harlem 1919: A Question of Leadership. Her academic training in Hispanic Studies also led to a simulation on the aftermath of political violence in Argentina\, Argentina 1985: Questions of Memory\, Truth\, and Justice. She has taught Spanish and Latin American literature as well as courses in women’s and gender studies\, first-year college seminars\, and the honors program\, which she directed for over a decade. \nNow living on Cape Cod\, she is thrilled by the current interest in the East Coast’s bohemia and the rebels who came to view Provincetown\, Truro and Wellfleet as Greenwich Village’s “summer suburbs.” She is currently researching how these first bohemians shaped and were shaped by their Cape experiences.

SUMMARY:Figure Painters and Model at Work
DESCRIPTION:Paul Schulenburg has organized a group of artists to paint a live model from 1:00 to 3:300. The public is invited to watch the Figure Painters at Work\, welcome to ask them questions as they progress\, and to stay until 4:00 for extra time to explore the works and chat with the creators. Schulenburg’s group reflects the long tradition of artists painting the figure together; perhaps Charles Hawthorne’s Cape Cod School of Art classes are the most recognized. The list of other artists from the era known for painting figures and portraits includes Edwin Dickinson\, William L’Engle\, John Sloan and\, of course\, Edward Hopper who certainly didn’t paint with a group. \nWe are delighted that Sky Freyss-Cole will be the model. \nIn this age of AI\, iPhones and Photoshop\, the Addison Art Gallery is especially pleased to open this intriguing viewing opportunity to the public. \nPaul Schulenburg is an internationally collected artist whose work has shown in the Hopper House Museum\, twice in solo shows at the Cape Cod Museum of Art\, and in many group exhibitions at CCMA\, Provincetown Art Association and Museum\, and Cahoon Museum of American Art. He has appeared over a dozen times in respected national art publications including a feature in Fine Art Connoisseur\, as well as on the cover of American Art Collector. Schulenburg won the Patrons’ Choice Award at the Copley Society of Art and was awarded a month long residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown MA. SUMMARY:Beyond Bohemia Wellfleet Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cape Cod’s naturally spectacular environment and cultural community continuously draw people from across the globe. As John Taylor Williams wrote\, this was true over 100 years ago as well. “Beginning around 1910\, those dedicated to radical political reform\, a new exploration of personal relationships free from Victorian strictures\, and a search for the new ‘American’ voice in writing\, painting\, architecture\, and theater congregated . . .” —The Shores of Bohemia\, A Cape Cod Story\, 1910-1960 \nHonoring this history and celebrating contemporary creators\, the Addison Art Gallery developed “Beyond Bohemia”—multi-media efforts including art exhibitions\, book signings\, panels\, music\, and plein air gatherings. Work by dozens of artists from across the United States and abroad are being shown in changing exhibits. \nCape Cod has long offered a plethora of opportunities for these diverse endeavors. “Few travelers are experts in American history or architecture\, in geology\, Atlantic coast fishing\, the modern theater\, antiques\, painting and marine biology. And yet when you visit the Cape all these are at hand\, tied up in a tight\, neat piece of country smelling of pine and offered you at the Canal Bridge like a prize box. There is so much packed into a small space in that magnificent yet cozy world called Cape Cod that fires the imagination. You want to know a lot of things\, all kinds of things on sea and land.” —Down Cape Cod by Katherine Dos Passos and Edith Shay (written in 1936)

SUMMARY:Memorial Day Weekend Reception and Figure Painting
DESCRIPTION:Paul Schulenburg and members of the Schulenburg Studio Figure Painting Group will begin painting a specially chosen model at 3:30 and continue through the start of the reception (a great time to meet with artists and to learn more about their work) at 5:00. \nLong before the onset of photography\, portraits served to capture a person’s likeness. As well\, portraits conveyed power\, familial ties\, virtue\, or other aspects of the subject. Today\, portraits continue to portray far more of a person than a photograph. They can speak volumes about an individual’s personality and their life. \n“Paul Schulenburg is one of those rare painters who can capture not just what something looks like but what it feels like. . . That alone makes his work a treasure.” —Sebastian Junger\, author of A Perfect Storm \nIt is always interesting to watch a diverse group of painters develop a work from a live model. This congenial group of artists is eager to share their knowledge and will happily answer audience questions. Paul Schulenburg\, and his group of figure painters\, have created portraits of such recognizable figures as film stars Dermot Mulroney and Alfie Woodward\, artists Salvatore Del Deo and Cynthia Packard\, musician Monica Rizzio\, and fisherman Keith Rose.

SUMMARY:Winter's Creative Explosion
DESCRIPTION:Painting Demonstrations. Live Music. Theater Groups. Book Signings. \nSome who aren’t on the Cape in the winter wonder what happens here after the aromas of suntan lotion and fried clams have dissipated. Those lucky enough to be here in the quieter months know it is a time of exploration\, socializing and productivity. \nThe public is invited to join authors\, artists\, performers\, friends and neighbors at the Addison Art Gallery in celebrating Cape creators and discovering the results of recent inspirations and diligent work. \nStarting at 4:00\, Jonathan McPhillips will be working on an oil painting of the Commercial Street approach to Provincetown. McPhillips\, a cum laude graduate of Connecticut College with a BFA in Fine Art\, captures the coastal splendor of New England. Equally adept in the studio or on location\, Jonathan’s work encompasses harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and the distinct architecture of the coastal marine environment. \nAt 5:00\, Maryalice Eizenberg will be painting a marsh scene in oil and Amy Sanders will be showing pastel techniques. \nMatthew Fitzpatrick\, author\nAfter 25 years on Wall Street\, Matt assessed his life and pursued his goal of becoming an author\, a dream hatched at twelve years old while reading Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot. This aspiration that was solidified years later over a pint of Guinness with Dennis Lehane\, who Matt hosted at the Pollard Library in Lowell\, MA named after his maternal grandfather. As a 100-ton US Coast Guard master captain\, Matt splits his time between Chatham and Falmouth. \nMatt will be signing his recently released fourth novel\, Forsythia’s Ride\, which is set in Chatham. Paul Schulenburg signing his book well as to discuss his recent paintings. \nThe staffs of two renowned Cape theaters will be on hand to preview this upcoming seasons and answer questions about how you can become involved. \nCape Rep Theatre\nArtists who wanted to develop a company dedicated to creativity and professionalism founded Cape Rep Theatre in 1986 and have worked hard to choose plays and musicals that continually challenge the artists who work there. Their two theaters are on 7 acres of land in Nickerson State Park in Brewster with a 135-seat Indoor Theater and an 200-seat Outdoor Theatre. “We make a deliberate choice to bring in artists from outside our community to keep our vision broad\, our company connected to the wider world and our productions as professional and creative as possible. Often our choices are works that may not ordinarily be produced because we try not to let size of cast\, degree of difficulty (or relative obscurity!) step in the way of choosing a show.” \nWellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre (WHAT)\nLauded by the New York Times for “establishing a beachhead for serious theater on Cape Cod”\, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater is a not-for-profit professional theater company dedicated to enriching the cultural life of the Outer Cape through plays and innovative programming that entertains\, inspires\, and informs a diverse\, multi-generational audience. WHAT has made its home at the state-of-the-art Julie Harris Stage on Route 6 in Wellfleet. 2024 marks WHAT’s 40th Anniversary and brings an eclectic season of drama\, comedy\, music\, and new works\, along with programs for youth and families. \nSarah Burrill will be performing her ever delightful song stylings. The Addison Art Gallery is happy to welcome Sarah back for this special celebration.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Portrait Tradition at Preservation Hall
DESCRIPTION:Master artist Paul Schulenburg and Wellfleet oysterman Richard Blakeley to Welcome the Public \nIf you haven’t yet had an opportunity to meet Paul Schulenburg or Richard Blakeley\, men who have mastered intriguing\, distinctive career paths\, now’s your chance. \nPaul Schulenburg and members of the Schulenburg Studio Figure Painting Group will begin painting Wellfleet oysterman Richard Blakeley at 3:00 at WPH. Painting will continue through the start of the reception (a great time to meet with artists and to learn more about their work) at 5:00. This event marks the opening of the month-long exhibition of Schulenburg’s Figure Paintings. The model for this session\, Richard Blakeley\, is a popular Wellfleetian integrally tied to the oyster industry. The Schulenburg Figure Painters have created portraits of such recognizable figures as film stars Dermot Mulroney and Alfie Woodward\, artists Salvatore Del Deo and Cynthia Packard\, and fisherman Keith Rose. \nSchulenburg’s work of the Cape’s fishing fleet is collected nationally. Speaking of his passion\, Schulenburg said\, “One reason I am drawn to painting the fleet because the work is foreign to me. These men and women risk their lives in an unprotected environment. I paint on dry land\, working to produce a painting\, to capture a tradition.\n“We are involved in work that goes back to early days. Humans have long caught fish for nourishment\, and they have drawn — in the sand and on cave walls — for pleasure and to communicate. Today\, with diminishing fish stocks and AI\, our ancient endeavors hang in a precarious balance. I am honored that so many appreciate my commitment to these endeavors.”

SUMMARY:10 Authors Signing\, 30 Books\, Homeless Prevention Council Benefit
DESCRIPTION:Join authors\, artists\, friends and neighbors for a celebration of Cape creators and the abundance of gifts they offer at a benefit for the Homeless Prevention Council (HPC). CEO Hadley Luddy said\, “HPC is thrilled to partner with Addison Art Gallery and grateful for their support as we see unprecedented community need.” Ten authors will be on hand and 30 titles ranging from mystery\, art and memoir to history\, nature and architecture will be available. \nJeannette de Beauvoir is a bestselling author of historical\, mystery\, and literary fiction (and an occasional poet!) whose Sydney Riley series is now on its ninth book. Her work has appeared in a number of literary journals and anthologies\, and she is a member of the Authors Guild\, the Mystery Writers of America\, Sisters in Crime\, and the National Writers Union. Her novels are firmly rooted in a sense of place\, whether a mystery series set in Montréal or historical fiction set in medieval France; she herself lives and writes from a small cottage by the seaside. \nYvonne deSousa’s latest book\, In Shelter of the Monument: A Provincetown Love Story\, is a coming-of-age memoir. In it we meet an insecure\, young woman living in a beautiful but unusual place\, Provincetown. Here she discovers inner strength from someone she’s not supposed to love. With that strength\, she learns that although you may need to leave the things that matter most\, you can still hold them in your heart forever. \nIn Nine Days is a look at dealing with aging parents by Judy Lannon. In this thoughtful work\, Sara\, a product of divorce\, narcissism and alcoholism\, works through a lifetime of self-doubt to develop as a stronger\, integrated woman. \nBrad Lussier offers How Does He Love Me\, A Collection of Love Sonnets\, published in 2021. He also brings two novels published this fall\, Michael’s Secret and its sequel\, No Secrets\, both set in 1937-38 on Prince Edward Island. A retired WWI Rear Admiral and senior strategist for the British Secret Intelligence Service\, fearing threats of war from the rising Nazi regime\, evacuates his wife and daughter to Highfield\, a country estate an ocean away from their home on the English Channel. As the world waits for war\, new lives and loves are kindled at Highfield. \nRomy Maimon will sign four books benefitting the Cape Cod Emergency Pet Care Program. \nOrleans native Mary McDermott grew up with a passion for local history. In her books\, she shares that passion through family memories\, short fiction\, and humorous accounts of her career as a justice of the peace. \nIn Through My Eyes\, Jeff Norgeot presents poems inspired by his life along the woods and shorelines of the lower Cape. A childhood on Pleasant Bay often immersed him in the outdoors and a career in marine construction brought him out into the natural world. \nWampanoag Art for the Ages was vetted by three tribal elders. Author Lee Roscoe\, a journalist\, environmental educator and activist\, was privileged to have unique access to artists and tribal leaders. The book starts in the wetu (a domed hut dwelling)\, and looks at pottery\, wampum\, clothing\, adornment\, matting\, twining\, painting and more with some of the foremost Wampanoag creators. Lee will also be signing the updated Dreaming Monomoy’s Past\, Walking Its Present. \nBrett Warren will be signing The Map of Unseen Things\, a collection of poems exploring the depths of emotions and honoring our natural world..

SUMMARY:Plein Air Painting at Edgewood Farms\, Truro
DESCRIPTION:During the opening reception for Truro Treasures 2023\, Addison Art Gallery and Truro Center for the Arts will present artists painting en plein air at beautiful Edgewood Farms. It is suggested that you arrive early (sunset will be at about 7:00). Carpooling is strongly advised. \nPlein air\, French for “open air\,” is used to describe paintings created outdoors. In Italian\, the term would be alfresco. In the 1870s\, the growth of plein air painting flourished with the introduction of paints in tubes. (Previously\, painters made their own paints by grinding and mixing dry pigments with linseed oil.) French Impressionists\, including Claude Monet\, Edouard Manet\, Edouard Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir\, advocated en plein air painting. Charles Webster Hawthorne\, who is attributed with starting the art colony in Provincetown\, came to Cape Cod to teach painting en plein air. \n“With plein air painting\, the eye perceives light and shadows from direct observation. Painting from memory is a challenge; you cannot possibly remember the nuances of reality. Photography can flatten space and distort perspective and color—while being helpful in the studio\, nothing substitutes for being there.” —Paul Schulenburg
