DESCRIPTION:Always looking for new lights\, Olivier travels often\, to Italy (Rome\, Venice)\, Vietnam\, Morocco\, Spain\, Egypt\, Mauritius — and he is once again coming to New England. He shows throughout France\, in China\, Japan and\, in the United States\, exclusively at the Addison Art Gallery. His work is featured in multiple books and films. \n  \nArtist’s Statement: My first inspiration remains the human being and its environment\, its connivance; small scenes of life become exceptional if one knows how to pay attention to them. Fleeting lights and movement\, dynamics\, our hesitations that give a meaning to life. \n  \nI love the Addison Art Gallery. The eclecticism of Helen’s choices\, the friendliness of her collector friends\, their loyalty and courage to open themselves to less conventional art forms. I too live on a coast: that of an Atlantic island\, Île de Ré; its charms\, for those who know\, could be confused with those of Cape Cod. Light\, sand dunes\, that “islander” character imposed on us by geography\, that seafarers’ solidarity\, and the endless sky that opens heart and mind. Helen and I have been working together since 2005. I hope this exhibition will be as lively and full of spontaneity as the previous eight!

SUMMARY:Paul Schulenburg Reception
DESCRIPTION:Paul Schulenburg is an internationally collected artist whose work has shown in the Hopper House Museum\, twice in solo shows at the Cape Cod Museum of Art\, and in many group exhibitions at CCMA\, Provincetown Art Association and Museum\, and Cahoon Museum of American Art. He has appeared over a dozen times in respected national art publications including the cover of American Art Collector. Schulenburg won the Patrons’ Choice Award at the Copley Society of art and was awarded a month long residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown MA. He is juried member of Oil Painters of America and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters of America. In 1987 he was commissioned by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to create a portrait of museum trustee Eliot Forbes.\n\n \nFor 20 years\, Paul created award-winning art for publication worldwide. His client list included: Digital Equipment Corporation\, Cigna\, Fidelity Investments\, Hewlett-Packard\, IBM\, Lucent Technologies\, Sunoco\, TIME\, U.S. News and World Report\, The Wall Street Journal\, Columbia Journalism Review\, Cahners\, Prentice Hall\, Houghton Mifflin\, and Ziff-Davis.\n\n \nPaul earned a BFA in painting at Boston University School of Fine Arts where he studied with Joseph Ablow\, Sidney Hurwitz\, and John Wilson. Boston University provided an educational foundation that emphasized the fundamentals of classical art training: anatomy and form\, color\, composition and draftsmanship.\n\n \nSchulenburg’s oils can be found in prestigious collections throughout the United States\, in Canada\, Europe and Hong Kong.

SUMMARY:French Cable Station Museum 50th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of its 50th anniversary\, the French Cable Station Museum (FCSM) will hold a 30-minute ceremony at noon on Saturday\, July 2 including a few brief talks and\, at the end\, play the French National Anthem. The Museum will be open for docent-led tours until 4:00 pm. There will also be a FCSM display at the Snow Library in Orleans through July. The FCSM is located at 41 South Orleans Road\, the corner of Cove Road and Route 28. frenchcablestationmuseum.org\nAddison Art Gallery\, 43 South Orleans Road\, invites visitors and celebrants to stop by for a toast and to view an exhibition of work by French artist Olivier Suire Verley. On his trips to the United States over two decades\, Verley has greeted FCSM guests when here for his exhibitions. \nAbout the French Cable Station Museum\nWhen it was in operation\, this station was the American termination point for a telegraph cable that came directly to Orleans from France. It was called Le Direct\, the direct cable. It was installed in 1898 and was almost 3\,200 miles long. \nThe first French Cable was installed in 1869 and landed in Duxbury\, MA. It had been routed through St. Pierre Island near Newfoundland. Duxbury was a busy shipping area\, not suitable as a place for submarine cable\, and a lot of damage occurred from fishing and shipping operations. \nA new French Cable was laid in 1879 to North Eastham at Nauset Light and a two-story station was built. North Eastham was an isolated area and difficult to reach in bad weather. The current building in Orleans was built in 1891.The equipment and men were moved to the new building in the same year. That’s correct\, the communications cable went under the water from Cape Cod to Europe. \nThe station remained in operation until 1959 except for a few years during WW II when it was closed for security reasons.\nThe station was purchased in 1972 from France by a committee of ten prominent Orleans citizens who raised the money and personally guaranteed a loan. They eventually raised the funds to eliminate the debt. The French Cable Station Museum first opened to the public in July of 1972.

SUMMARY:Life at Land's End: Marc Kundmann
DESCRIPTION:Freedom. Peace. Exploration. Creation. Connection. Life in a land of possibilities and gifts.\n\n  \nMarc will demonstrate painting on the gallery lawn during the artists’ reception from 4:00 to 6:00. (He will also hold open studio hours Friday\, September 10 from noon to 4:00 at 14 Bradford Street\, Provincetown.) \nShowing new work year round \nMarc Kundmann works in encaustic\, oil\, charcoal\, acrylic\, and cold wax allowing him to build and remove layers of color\, transparency\, and pigments\, and to use texture expressively. His hope is that the resulting layers create not only intriguing and beautiful surfaces\, but also give emotional life to the subjects and hint at the mystery inside. Kundmann studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of creating on Cape Cod including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them he learned to explore materials\, freeing himself from the constraints of representing the real world and allowing him to work expressively\, responding to color and composition allowing the painting to evolve into its final form. \n  \nArtist’s statement \nBefore I embarked on my adventure in painting\, I asked an artist I respected for his thoughts on where to begin and how to approach a painting. His best advice: don’t try to paint a feeling or specific emotion. Just paint. The emotional quality will come through. Keeping this in mind\, I began to paint my surroundings\, the wild beaches of Truro in particular\, en plein aire. I studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of painting and art-making on the Cape including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann’s\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them I learned to explore materials\, free myself from the constraints of representing the real world and work in a more expressive way\, responding to color and composition and creating work from both intellect and emotion. I am also particularly influenced by the Bay Area Figurative Movement including painters David Park\, Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn.

DESCRIPTION:Due to restrictions on the Canadian border\, Sara Jane has shipped her latest works for you enjoy\, and she looks forward to joining us again in 2022. \n \n \nThe “Up Close and Personal” exhibition will feature a collection of new works featuring inhabitants of the sea\, above and beneath the waves\, from the fascinating octopus tentacles to collections of shells\, all up close and personal. \n \n \nSaraJane’s painting style ranges from traditional representational to contemporary realism\, and her work reflects a fascination with the natural world and its transformations. Whether her subject is a glossy cluster of cherries\, the chipped paint of an antique\, or the colorful jumble of seashells on a beach\, her paintings capture the larger-than-life essence of everyday objects and scenes. Her playful\, whimsical approach to her subjects is balanced by a technical mastery of paint\, which combines to create detailed\, thoughtful\, and energetic compositions. SaraJane Doberstein was born in 1976 in Hamilton\, Ontario\, Canada\, and grew up in Owen Sound\, Ontario on beautiful Georgian Bay. Her interest in the arts began at an early age\, when she developed a passion for capturing the American coastline during family trips along the east coast. Since 2000\, after attending Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and Fanshawe College\, she has devoted herself to the life of a professional artist. SaraJane visits the United States as often as possible\, finding inspiration in the beauty of its coastal areas for her vivid paintings of seashells\, shore birds\, and crabs. SaraJane’s painting style ranges from traditional representational to contemporary realism\, and her work reflects a fascination with the natural world and its transformations. Whether her subject is a glossy cluster of cherries\, the chipped paint of an antique\, or the colorful jumble of seashells on a beach\, her paintings capture the larger-than-life essence of everyday objects and scenes. DESCRIPTION:Meet Andrea on Saturday\, August 28 for a reception with demonstration from 4:00 to 6:00 \nAndrea Petitto shares intimate observations creating an uncommon and lively vision of people and animals living their everyday lives. Bold paint strokes express figures within the sun and atmosphere of Cape Cod beaches and markets\, often within exciting abstractions. \n  \n“These paintings have been aptly described as ‘the middles of stories’ where the viewer might sense beginnings and ends from their own experience.” —Andrea Petitto \n \nAndrea Petitto was born in rural Massachusetts where\, in her youth\, she had to choose between art and science. Andrea’s father had been a sculptor and Andrea grew up making things with modeling clay. Instead of the usual children’s literature\, as a small child Andrea was fascinated by the images in large folio books of Rodin and Michelangelo sculptures. These influences can still be seen in the strong sense of solidity and form in her paintings. In 1990\, after a career as university professor and industry consultant\, she moved to art. A course in oil painting in 1997 was a life-changing event. Around the turn of the century Andrea devoted herself to the study of painting and became a full-time artist with a particular passion for the human figure. Her love of dogs and other animals lead her to include animals in her figurative work. Andrea taught art classes at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua NY\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and Creative Arts Center\, Chatham. She has had solo shows in Canandaigua and at the Copley Society in Boston\, and has won many awards in Rochester\, NY\, Boston’s Copley Society\, and at many venues on Cape Cod. Artist’s Statement I have always made some kind of art. As a child\, I created things with clay\, and I have always made drawings of things that I like to look at or just imagine. Later in life I was introduced to oil painting and never looked back. The paint made my drawings come to life. Figural work is my passion because of the evocative nature of body language and form. A level of abstraction in the figure allows the viewer to experience the emotional impact in a universal way\, without concern for a specific identity. Brush or knife strokes are more important to me than representational detail. I like the tension between the sense of paint and surface on one hand and the illusion of form and depth on the other. I try to make my subject matter look like it’s been chiseled from stone and yet alive and breathing\, a contrast that I find beautiful and exciting.

SUMMARY:Paul Schulenburg's 21st One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:Paul Schulenburg is an internationally collected artist whose work has shown in the Hopper House Museum\, twice in solo shows at the Cape Cod Museum of Art\, and in many group exhibitions at CCMA\, Provincetown Art Association and Museum\, and Cahoon Museum of American Art. He has appeared over a dozen times in respected national art publications including the cover of American Art Collector.  \n\n\nHe will be at the gallery to meet with collectors from 11:00am to 1:00pm and from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. \n\n\nSchulenburg won the Patrons’ Choice Award at the Copley Society of Art\, multiple awards at the prestigious Salmagundi Club in NYC\, and was awarded a month long residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown MA. He is juried member of Oil Painters of America. In 1987 he was commissioned by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to create a portrait of museum trustee Eliot Forbes. \n\n\nFor 20 years\, Paul created award-winning art for publication worldwide. His client list included: Digital Equipment Corporation\, Cigna\, Fidelity Investments\, Hewlett-Packard\, IBM\, Lucent Technologies\, Sunoco\, TIME\, U.S. News and World Report\, The Wall Street Journal\, Columbia Journalism Review\, Cahners\, Prentice Hall\, Houghton Mifflin\, and Ziff-Davis. \n\n\nPaul earned a BFA in painting at Boston University School of Fine Arts where he studied with Joseph Ablow\, Sidney Hurwitz\, and John Wilson. Boston University provided an educational foundation that emphasized the fundamentals of classical art training: anatomy and form\, color\, composition and draftsmanship. \n\n\nSchulenburg’s oils can be found in prestigious collections throughout the United States\, in Canada\, Europe and Hong Kong.

The delights of home and and gardens. \nWith artistic compositions\, Maryalice Eizenberg combines shapes and colors to share the joys she experiences during Cape Cod summers. Each painting abounds with color and brightens hearts. \nEizenberg is an award-winning artist\, raised surrounded by a family of musicians supportive of her interest in the visual arts. She has been drawing and painting all of her life. She completed coursework at the Worcester and Springfield Fine Arts museums\, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Clark University\, and studied with painters John Cosby\, Donald Demers\, Kim English\,Daniel Keys\, Gregg Kreutz\, Joseph Paquet\, and Charles Sovek. Dramatic patterns of light and color are what attract her most to a subject. It is her emotional response to these elements that she strives to share with the viewer. \nEizenberg has been featured in Cape Cod Life and Chatham magazines and “The Creative Spirit\, Art in Chatham’s Old Village.” Her work also appears in Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: People and Places by Deborah Forman. \nShe teaches at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham\, and is a member of Oil Painters of America\, and Twenty One in Truro. Her work has been shown in museums on and off the Cape. Her work is held in private collections in the United States\, Europe and Japan. \nArtist’s Statement \nRealism that excites has a foundation in abstraction of design. A pattern of light that makes form\, saturates color and creates mood holds it together and tells a story. It is the story that is the bond between the artist and the audience.

Studies can help an artist plan composition\, color choices\, light and perspective. More spontaneous than most finished works\, studies can be dynamic\, show the artist’s thought process and often differ greatly from the finally presented paintings. For instance\, Michelangelo’s study for the Libyan Sibyl on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is based on a male model while the finished painting is of a woman. This exhibition gives the viewer a look at the work and experiments that lead to the art we see completed and framed.

For more information\, email helen@addisonart.com. \nJoin Amy Sanders to discover the secret to building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works toward bringing a painting to life through the building up of multiple layers for a demonstration on the gallery lawn Friday\, July 17 at 11:00. (Masks and physical distance required) Pastel is a unique medium\, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance that is the hallmark of the medium.
