His technique is very similar to that of the old masters — a structured approach that utilizes a monochrome underpainting with direct overpainting\, minimal glazing and scumbling and the use of a special medium. \nPaul’s sketchbook is a digital camera with a macro lens which he uses to create compelling compositions that combine rhythm & repetition with light and shadow effects. The tripartite nature of the process — the object itself\, the photograph of the object\, and the translation of both into a painting — goes beyond the mere copying of a static reference. Although Paul paints flowers\, its the adverbs and adjectives used to describe them that are the subjects of his paintings. “I continue to be awed by the mathematics of repeating patterns underlying their beauty. Their color and variety command my attention while the blossoming of a flower triggers the sense that something miraculous is coming.” \nThe paintings Paul creates are based on a composite of many images. Like much great art\, they are a combination of fact and fiction. As a digital image editor for most of his professional career of more than 40 years\, Paul now uses digital technology to examine and edit\, larger than life\, the flowers he photographs. Whereas a still life painter seeks to capture an impression of a fleeting moment of light and time\, Paul methodically seeks to reveal the intricacy and elegance of their design. He spends hours exploring the design possibilities before putting brush to canvas. Andrea’s father had been a sculptor and Andrea grew up making things with modeling clay. Instead of the usual children’s literature\, as a small child\, Andrea was fascinated by the images in large folio books of Rodin and Michelangelo sculptures. These influences can still be seen in the strong sense of solidity and form in her paintings. In 1990\, after a career as a university professor and industry consultant\, she moved to art. A course in oil painting in 1997 was a life-changing event. \nAround the turn of the century\, Andrea devoted herself to the study of painting and became a full-time artist with a particular passion for the human figure. Her love of dogs and other animals lead her to include animals in her figurative work. \nAndrea taught art classes at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua NY\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and Creative Arts Center\, Chatham. She has had solo shows in Canandaigua and at the Copley Society in Boston\, and has won many awards in Rochester\, NY\, Boston’s Copley Society\, and at many venues on Cape Cod. \nArtist’s Statement\nI have always made some kind of art. As a child\, I created things with clay\, and I have always made drawings of things that I like to look at or just imagine. Later in life I was introduced to oil painting and never looked back. The paint made my drawings come to life. \nFigural work is my passion because of the evocative nature of body language and form. A level of abstraction in the figure allows the viewer to experience the emotional impact in a universal way\, without concern for a specific identity. Brush or knife strokes are more important to me than representational detail. I like the tension between the sense of paint and surface on one hand and the illusion of form and depth on the other. I try to make my subject matter look like it’s been chiseled from stone and yet alive and breathing\, a contrast that I find beautiful and exciting. Swirling Currents tells the stories behind the headlines highlighting how a local event is often part of a much larger picture. Whales; sharks chasing seals chasing fish; turtles stranding; functionally extinct oysters and aquaculture filling the gap; the Gulf of Maine heating swiftly and the Gulf Stream slowing down — all happening in the global context of dynamic coastal change. \nSusan Baur will be signing A Guide to the Best Ponds on Cape Cod and the Best Ways of Preserving Them. The aim of the Guide is to teach readers how the pond ecosystems on Cape Cod work and encourage them to treat ponds with care. With this guide you can find hidden jewels\, learn what every pond needs to stay healthy\, and leave those you visit cleaner than you found them. \nBaur lived in Chatham from 2003 to 2009 where she switched from swimming in salt water to fresh. Soon she became intrigued by the painted turtles\, stinkpot or musk turtles\, and enormous snapping turtles that she encountered in local ponds from Orleans to Harwich. She started an illustrated journal and made an entry for every one of the 60-plus swims she took each summer\, noting each turtle she encountered. Drawing maps of several ponds\, she marked exactly where she saw each one. Eventually she was able to identify about a dozen turtles by sight. Next she bought a couple of wet suits and extended her turtle-watching season to a full five months. \nHeidi Clemmer and Marisa Picariello will be presenting the Cape Cod Eco-Tales book series. Author Heidi Clemmer was an educator at Wellfleet Elementary School for 21 years. Cape Cod Eco-Tales is the result of a passion for the varied and significant eco-systems that dominate the Outer Cape Cod landscape. Illustrator Marisa Picariello is a Wellfleet resident who studied art at Wheaton College.
