SUMMARY:Wine and Dine with Marc Kundmann
DESCRIPTION:Chef Brian Erskine of Blackfish Restaurant will create a five-course tasting menu\, complemented by South Hollow Spirits cocktails and Truro Vineyards wines\, featuring live music by Auguste and Alden. For tickets or more information\, please call 508.487.6200 or email events@trurovineyardsofcapecod.com. \nMarc Kundmann works in encaustic and acrylic media. Both allow him to build and remove layers of color\, transparency\, and pigments\, and to use texture expressively. His hope is that the resulting layers create not only intriguing and beautiful surfaces\, but also give emotional life to the subjects and hint at the mystery inside. \nKundmann studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of creating on Cape Cod including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them he learned to explore materials\, freeing himself from the constraints of representing the real world and allowing him to work expressively\, responding to color and composition allowing the painting to evolve into its final form.

SUMMARY:Outermost Inspirations
DESCRIPTION:Outermost House \nInspired by the Cape Cod National Seashore and Henry Beston’s Outermost House \nHenry Beston’s 1928 book\, The Outermost House\, is a classic of American Literature. Beston (1888-1968) wrote the book after spending a solitary “year” in a 20×16 house on the dunes of Eastham on Cape Cod\, studying and observing the wonders of the elements in this stunning setting. Plein air painting in the morning\, talk\, book signing and reception in the afternoon. \nThe Outermost House is considered one of the seminal works of today’s environmental movements and is one of the reasons that the Cape Cod National Seashore exists today. Rachel Carson said it was the only book that ever influenced her writing.

SUMMARY:Wine and Dine with Andrea Petitto
DESCRIPTION:Chef Brian Erskine of Blackfish Restaurant will create a five-course tasting menu\, complemented by South Hollow Spirits cocktails and Truro Vineyards wines\, featuring live music by Haze & Dacey. For tickets or more information\, please call 508.487.6200 or email events@trurovineyardsofcapecod.com. \nAndrea Petitto’s father was a sculptor and Andrea grew up making things with clay. Instead of the usual children’s literature\, Andrea was fascinated by the images in large folio books of Rodin and Michelangelo sculptures. These influences can still be seen in the strong sense of solidity and form in her paintings. After a career as university professor and industry consultant\, she moved to art. \nFor 20 years\, Andrea has devoted herself to painting. She also became an avid amateur dog trainer and handler. Andrea has combined her love of dogs and other animals with her interest in figural art leading to many paintings of her own dogs as well as others she encounters on the beaches of Cape Cod. \nAndrea taught art classes at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua NY\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and Creative Arts Center\, Chatham. She has had solo shows in Canandaigua and at the Copley Society in Boston\, and has won many awards Rochester NY\, the Copley Society in Boston\, and on Cape Cod.

SUMMARY:Swooping in for Wild Care
DESCRIPTION:Artists from across the Cape and beyond are joining the Addison Art Gallery in support of Wild Care. Spearheaded by artists SaraJane Doberstein and Amy Sanders\, and Helen Addison\, Swooping in for Wild Care includes an exhibit of new works by gallery and invited artists\, a reception on Saturday\, June 9 from 5 to 7\, live music\, book signings and a raffle. \nEducational animals planning to attend include two Eastern Screech Owls\, Up Up and Nickerson\, and Turtle #45\, an Eastern Box Turtle. More information about these four-legged and feathery friends can be found here: https://www.wildcarecapecod.org/programs-events/animal-ambassador/ \nThe raffle prize\, valued at over $1\,000\, includes an original oil painting by SaraJane Doberstein\, a museum quality\, framed print of an Amy Sanders pastel\, and a $250 gift certificate to the Addison Art Gallery. Additionally\, a portion of all sales made during the reception will be donated to Wild Care and Wild Care merchandise will be available for purchase. \nThat afternoon\, you are also invited to watch Amy and SaraJane demonstrate their unique painting techniques from 3:00 to 4:30. Amy will demonstrate building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works towards bringing a painting to life through the building up of multiple layers. Pastel is a unique medium\, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance that is the hallmark of the medium. Watching SaraJane\, you will see the media and techniques she uses to achieve the unique perspective in her coastal work. She will begin with a raw umber tonal value underpainting. She will paint from there using the layering techniques scumbling and glazing\, with some areas painted alla prima\, wet in wet. Each artist will share knowledge based on decades of experience. Audience questions and comments will be encouraged and add to the afternoon. \nSusanna Graham-Pye will be on hand to sign There is a Season\, her book inspired by Karen Von den Deale who gained a reputation for rescuing and caring for wild animals in her backyard. Soon her home was filled year-round with injured wildlife\, and her successes saving lives soon gave birth to a full-fledged clinic: Wild Care\, founded in 1989. Proceeds from the sale of the book will split between the author and Wild Care. \nRalphie’s Cool Vacation by Jeffery Carter is a delightful tale of a brave bird that is looking for a change. Though he knows nothing of migration\, Ralphie wants to visit Cape Cod. This delightful book follows Ralphie through his light-hearted adventure as he encounters a variety of helpful creatures along the way including a hurricane named Jose. The watercolor illustrations in the book were created by Jeff’s wife\, Deborah who teaches art at Veritas Academy in Centerville. Jeffery\, a special education teacher and coach for over years\, began writing for children and young adults as a personal challenge to create a piece of writing that would motivate reluctant readers such as his daughter to want to open a book and explore a new world. He serves as a board member for the Cape Cod Writers’ Center. Jeff and Deborah will be on hand to sign copies of the book. \nAuthor Peter Trull has been involved in field research and education on Cape Cod for 40 years. He conducted field research in Guyana and Surinam\, studying the market trapping of Common and Roseate Terns\, working with local bird trappers in several coastal villages where he hesitatingly admits he’s eaten Common Terns and 15 to 20 species of sandpipers and plovers. He served as Education Director at The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies and presently teaches at the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School. He has written six books on the Cape’s natural history\, describing the lives of coywolves\, cetaceans and his lifelong passion\, birds. His newest book The Life of Terns – Birds of Paradox\, will be released in 2019.\nOn Mr. Trull’s most recently published book\, The Gray Curtain: “Peter Trull is a world class naturalist and the go-to expert for all things wild on Cape Cod. In this fascinating book\, he explores the complexity of cause and effect in a natural ecosystem as three of the ocean’s top predators converge on Cape Cod.” \n— Gregory Skomal\, Ph.D. Senior Marine Fisheries Scientist\, MA Marine Fisheries.

SUMMARY:Arts for the Earth: Painting\, Writing and Singing to benefit for the Orleans Conservation Trust
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Earth Day 2018\, come and watch award-winning painters at work\, hear acclaimed singer-songwriter Sarah Burrill perform\, and meet authors Robert Finch and Peter Trull who will be signing their books. \nArtists demonstrating include Maryalice Eizenberg\, who will be painting in oil\, and Amy Sanders\, who will demonstrate in pastel. Adults and children alike are amazed to see the processes that lead to a finished painting. The artists are happy to answer questions and discuss their techniques. \nOne of America’s leading nature writers\, Robert Finch has lived on Cape Cod since 1971. He has published eight books of essays and is co-editor of The Norton Book of Nature Writing. His weekly radio commentary\, A Cape Cod Notebook\, has been broadcast since 2005 on WCAI\, the Woods Hole NPR affiliate of WGBH\, and for which he twice received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Radio Writing. His essays have appeared in numerous magazines and journals and his books have been translated into Japanese and Chinese. He was named as one of the New England Literary Lights by the Associates of the Boston Public Library\, and has received the Non-Fiction Award from the New England Booksellers Association. \nMr. Finch has taught at numerous colleges and writers conferences\, including Williams College\, Emerson College\, Carleton College\, Spalding University\, Penn State\, the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center and the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. A resident of Wellfleet\, his latest book is The Outer Beach: A Thousand-Mile Walk on Cape Cod’s Atlantic Shore.\nPeter Trull has been involved in field research and education on Cape Cod for 40 years. His newest book The Life of Terns – Birds of Paradox\, will be released in 2019. \nOn Mr. Trull’s most recent book\, The Gray Curtain: “Peter Trull is a world class naturalist and the go-to expert for all things wild on Cape Cod. In this fascinating book\, he explores the complexity of cause and effect in a natural ecosystem as three of the ocean’s top predators converge on Cape Cod.” — Gregory Skomal\, Ph.D. Senior Marine Fisheries Scientist. MA Marine Fisheries \nThis lively event will feature a raffle prize that includes a framed photography by National Geographic photographer Hardie Truesdale\, books by Robert Finch\, Peter Trull and Mike O’Connor\, and gift certificates from Addison Art Gallery and Lakefarm Gardens. A portion of the proceeds from all books and art sold during the event with benefit the efforts of the Orleans Conservation Trust.

SUMMARY:Party For Health
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, the Addison Art Gallery is joining with friends to create a fun event and raise money for the betterment of our community. \nJoin us for live music by Sarah Burrill with food and drink provided by the Land Ho! and Cape Cod Kombucha. Guests can chat with award-winning artists while learning about the Healthy Parks\, Healthy People project led by Dr. Elissa Thompson\, CCH cardiologist. Three gorgeous flower arrangements from Flowers by Mary will also be available for purchase with 100% of the profits going to the Cape Cod Hospital. \nHealthy Parks\, Healthy People\nCape Cod National Seashore teamed up with Cape Cod Healthcare to promote wellness and exercise on five scenic walking trails. As part of the program\, when you arrive at the Healthy Parks\, Healthy People base camp\, a representative from Cape Cod Healthcare will be there to measure your blood pressure before and after your walk. In addition\, your weight\, and Body Mass Index (BMI) will be measured\, if you would like this information to be tracked. Check this link to sign up and for more information: http://www.capecodhealth.org/about/healthy-parks-healthy-people/ \nWhy Art is Good for Your Health\nThe World Health Organization defines good health as the complete state of physical\, mental and social wellbeing\, not just the absence of disease or illness. Art improves one’s environment and can lead to relaxation and peaceful contemplation. Studies have shown looking at art can decrease high stress levels and a study done in London discovered that when a person views art they find beautiful\, it triggers an immediate release of dopamine into the brain – the chemical related to feelings of love and pleasure. There are many reasons why hospitals adorn their walls with original art and many benefits for you to have art in your home. \nWhy Socializing is Good for Your Health\nBeing with people is associated with a stronger immune system so you are less likely to catch a cold. Face-to-face interactions raise one’s mood decreasing depression. An active social life keeps your brain sharp and decreases the chances of developing dementia. Isolated people do not live as long as those who socialize. \nWhy Music is Good for Your Health\nMusic engages areas of the brain which are involved with paying attention\, making predictions and updating events in our memory. The emotions people have while listening to music have a healthy effect on blood vessel function. Music is proven to make people feel happier and can trigger the brain to release chemicals that distract the body from pain.

SUMMARY:Before the Masterpieces
DESCRIPTION:An intriguing show of new works along with the sketches\, studies and reference photos and notes created in preparation for the finished paintings. \nStudies can help an artist plan composition\, color choices\, light and perspective. More spontaneous than most finished works\, studies can be dynamic\, show the artist’s thought process and often differ greatly from the finally presented works. For instance\, Michelangelo’s study for the Libyan Sibyl on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is based on a male model while the finished painting is of a woman. This exhibition gives the viewer a look at the work and experiments that lead to the art we see completed and framed.

SUMMARY:Steve Kennedy’s Open Studio Reception
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to Steve Kennedy’s Open Studio Reception\nSunday\, November 13 from 3 to 5\n35A Brittany’s Way\, Unit 3\nEastham\nRSVP by November 9 to helen@addisonart.com \nSteve Kennedy works in the plein air tradition. In all seasons\, his commitment to plein air painting takes him outside for direct observation of his subjects. He refers to his style as painterly realism\, and says\, “I consistently find myself drawn to scenes with strong patterns of light and shadow. Even the most mundane views can be extraordinary in the right circumstances.” His paintings are usually completed in a single session. Larger paintings take more time\, sometimes more than six sessions. Kennedy also works in his studio. Indoor paintings are done from photographs\, sketches and field notes. The studio affords him the opportunity to capture fleeting effects of light not easily painted on location. \nKennedy’s subjects usually include the older\, time-worn elements of the New England area where he’s lived all his life – classic period buildings\, rusty fishing boats and quiet streets at twilight. Kennedy favors early morning and late afternoon light\, when the sunlight is stronger and long shadows deepen a mood. He cites Edward Hopper as primary influence. He relates to Hopper’s statement\, “What I wanted to do was paint sunlight on the side of a house.” \nKennedy grew up in Central Connecticut. He spent summers with his family in South Portland\, Maine\, where he was greatly impressed with the port city’s then largely abandoned waterfront. It was here his love for things of the sea took root. Upon graduation from the Paier College of Art (New Haven\, CT) in 1981\, Kennedy moved to Cape Cod and began focusing more on traditional plein air painting\, working outdoors year round. His use of color complements his interest in light and shadow. As an artist\, he has drawn inspiration from the rooftops of Provincetown\, the harbor and streets of Gloucester\, the catboats of Wellfleet\, and views around New Bedford and Portland\, Maine. He’s also roamed farther afield and painted in rural locations such as Nova Scotia and Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy. \nKennedy has lived on Cape Cod for over 30 years. His work is in many public and private collections\, including the permanent collection of the Cape Cod Museum of Art (Dennis\, MA)\, Cahoon Museum of Art (Falmouth)\, New Haven Paint and Clay Club (New Haven\, CT)\, Albany Institute of History and Art\, (NY) the Key Bank and People’s Heritage Bank (former names\, both in Maine)\, and Cape Cod’s oldest bank\, Seamen’s Bank. He has won awards at the Salmagundi Club in NYC\, North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester MA\, Gallery at Mystic Seaport in Mystic\, CT\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable MA\, and other locations. He is also an admired painting instructor.
