SUMMARY:Swooping in for Wild Care
DESCRIPTION:Artists from across the Cape and beyond are joining the Addison Art Gallery in support of Wild Care. Spearheaded by artists SaraJane Doberstein and Amy Sanders\, and Helen Addison\, Swooping in for Wild Care includes an exhibit of new works by gallery and invited artists\, a reception on Saturday\, June 9 from 5 to 7\, live music\, book signings and a raffle. \nEducational animals planning to attend include two Eastern Screech Owls\, Up Up and Nickerson\, and Turtle #45\, an Eastern Box Turtle. More information about these four-legged and feathery friends can be found here: https://www.wildcarecapecod.org/programs-events/animal-ambassador/ \nThe raffle prize\, valued at over $1\,000\, includes an original oil painting by SaraJane Doberstein\, a museum quality\, framed print of an Amy Sanders pastel\, and a $250 gift certificate to the Addison Art Gallery. Additionally\, a portion of all sales made during the reception will be donated to Wild Care and Wild Care merchandise will be available for purchase. \nThat afternoon\, you are also invited to watch Amy and SaraJane demonstrate their unique painting techniques from 3:00 to 4:30. Amy will demonstrate building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works towards bringing a painting to life through the building up of multiple layers. Pastel is a unique medium\, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance that is the hallmark of the medium. Watching SaraJane\, you will see the media and techniques she uses to achieve the unique perspective in her coastal work. She will begin with a raw umber tonal value underpainting. She will paint from there using the layering techniques scumbling and glazing\, with some areas painted alla prima\, wet in wet. Each artist will share knowledge based on decades of experience. Audience questions and comments will be encouraged and add to the afternoon. \nSusanna Graham-Pye will be on hand to sign There is a Season\, her book inspired by Karen Von den Deale who gained a reputation for rescuing and caring for wild animals in her backyard. Soon her home was filled year-round with injured wildlife\, and her successes saving lives soon gave birth to a full-fledged clinic: Wild Care\, founded in 1989. Proceeds from the sale of the book will split between the author and Wild Care. \nRalphie’s Cool Vacation by Jeffery Carter is a delightful tale of a brave bird that is looking for a change. Though he knows nothing of migration\, Ralphie wants to visit Cape Cod. This delightful book follows Ralphie through his light-hearted adventure as he encounters a variety of helpful creatures along the way including a hurricane named Jose. The watercolor illustrations in the book were created by Jeff’s wife\, Deborah who teaches art at Veritas Academy in Centerville. Jeffery\, a special education teacher and coach for over years\, began writing for children and young adults as a personal challenge to create a piece of writing that would motivate reluctant readers such as his daughter to want to open a book and explore a new world. He serves as a board member for the Cape Cod Writers’ Center. Jeff and Deborah will be on hand to sign copies of the book. \nAuthor Peter Trull has been involved in field research and education on Cape Cod for 40 years. He conducted field research in Guyana and Surinam\, studying the market trapping of Common and Roseate Terns\, working with local bird trappers in several coastal villages where he hesitatingly admits he’s eaten Common Terns and 15 to 20 species of sandpipers and plovers. He served as Education Director at The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies and presently teaches at the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School. He has written six books on the Cape’s natural history\, describing the lives of coywolves\, cetaceans and his lifelong passion\, birds. His newest book The Life of Terns – Birds of Paradox\, will be released in 2019.\nOn Mr. Trull’s most recently published book\, The Gray Curtain: “Peter Trull is a world class naturalist and the go-to expert for all things wild on Cape Cod. In this fascinating book\, he explores the complexity of cause and effect in a natural ecosystem as three of the ocean’s top predators converge on Cape Cod.” \n— Gregory Skomal\, Ph.D. Senior Marine Fisheries Scientist\, MA Marine Fisheries.

SUMMARY:Outermost Inspiration Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Featuring new works by area and national artists capturing the beauty of our surroundings. For the entire month of February in the Cape Cod National Seashore’s Salt Pond Visitors Center\, Eastham. The show is curated by Helen Katherine Addison\, owner of the internationally respected Addison Art Gallery. \nHenry Beston\nHenry Beston’s 1928 book\, The Outermost House\, is a classic of American Literature. Beston (1888-1968) wrote the book after spending a solitary “year” in a 20×16 house on the dunes of Eastham on Cape Cod\, studying and observing the wonders of the elements in this stunning setting. \nThe Outermost House is considered one of the seminal works of today’s environmental movements and is one of the reasons that the Cape Cod National Seashore exists today. Rachel Carson said it was the only book that ever influenced her writing. \nDon Wilding\nSince the start of the millennium\, Don Wilding has been telling stories of Cape Cod Outer Beach history through lectures\, video\, and the written word. An award-winning writer and editor for Massachusetts newspapers for 30 years\, Don pens the popular “Shore Lore” history column for the Cape Codder newspaper of Orleans\, and is the author of two books\, Henry Beston’s Cape Cod: How ‘The Outermost House’ Inspired a National Seashore and A Brief History of Eastham: On the Outer Beach of Cape Cod from The History Press. \nThe Cape Cod National Seashore\nThe Cape Cod National Seashore was created on August 7\, 1961\, encompasses 43\,607 acres\, and includes ponds\, woods and nearly 40 miles of seashore along the Atlantic-facing eastern shore of Cape Cod. Lighthouses\, cultural landscapes\, and wild cranberry bogs offer a glimpse of Cape Cod’s past and continuing ways of life. The Seashore has inspired artists\, writers and poets from across the globe.

SUMMARY:Painting Animals and other Figures using Palette Knife and Brushes
DESCRIPTION:Demo at the Mastering your Mark Art Conference \n  \nAndrea Petitto will demonstrate how she begins and develops a painting using brushes and palette knives at various stages of the work\, and the use of knife strokes to create texture\, to blend colors on the canvas\, and to express line and mass. Using a palette knife to paint introduces a whole range of textures and strokes that contributes to a masterful sense of paint handling. It also makes possible an enhanced crispness of color and line for bolder and more compelling images. In any given painting\, an artist can use both brushes and palette knives for different effects and different stages of the painting process.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Our Waters Reception\, Exhibition and Book signing
DESCRIPTION:Join artists and friends for a casual reception and exhibition of new paintings inspired by the shores and waters of Cape Cod. \nBook signing with Susan Anarino\, author of 365 Cape Cod Ponds\, Day by Day. “Once I discovered that Cape Cod had 365 ponds I vowed to see if this was true. I found the magic under snow draped pines\, beneath squawking seagulls\, beside bandstands and in rainy woods. There I encountered swans\, herons\, boat parades and a little fisher girl. Some have hiking trails\, some herring runs\, some swimming beaches\, some are stocked with trout and some are home to egrets\, dragonflies and snapping turtles. I promise if you stand waterside\, breathe in the beauty and wait\, something magical will happen. This book\, complete with photos\, while written chronologically\, can be read as individual entries depending on the time of year or your preference.”

SUMMARY:Celebrating Edward Hopper's Legacy on Cape Cod
DESCRIPTION:After Hopper honors the legacy of Edward Hopper by celebrating contemporary artists inspired by his work and the places he painted with an emphasis on Cape Cod. In 1930\, Edward Hopper and his wife Jo spent their first summer on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Having traveled through many states and France\, they built their home here on a bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay. \nHopper is considered America’s greatest realist painter. His unforgettable images\, infused with emotion\, speak of history and progress\, the buildings we inhabit\, our natural environment\, and people we may encounter. He inspires us to delve beyond the mere visual enabling each viewer to respond with his or her own stories and feelings — the walk in a wind-swept dune\, the family home on the bay\, the gas station owner once again filling a tank.
