SUMMARY:The French Influence
DESCRIPTION:Popular artists Paul Schulenburg\, Susan Overstreet\, Andrea Petitto and Dale Michaels Wade will present plein air work and studio paintings inspired by the magnificent rivers and cliffs\, and the charming villages of the French countryside. These painting comrades traveled together and inspired each other to create exceptional works to bring back home to all of us on this side of the Atlantic. \nJoin us for a casual panel discussion and Q&A from 3 to 4 and a taste of the French countryside from 4 to 6 on Saturday\, December 3rd. The exhibition includes plein air works and paintings finished in their studios. We are pleased to have these artists join our long tradition of a French connection started by John Murphy and Olivier Suire Verley. Schulenburg will also present works from his time in Spain and Italy.

SUMMARY:Steve Kennedy’s Open Studio Reception
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to Steve Kennedy’s Open Studio Reception\nSunday\, November 13 from 3 to 5\n35A Brittany’s Way\, Unit 3\nEastham\nRSVP by November 9 to helen@addisonart.com \nSteve Kennedy works in the plein air tradition. In all seasons\, his commitment to plein air painting takes him outside for direct observation of his subjects. He refers to his style as painterly realism\, and says\, “I consistently find myself drawn to scenes with strong patterns of light and shadow. Even the most mundane views can be extraordinary in the right circumstances.” His paintings are usually completed in a single session. Larger paintings take more time\, sometimes more than six sessions. Kennedy also works in his studio. Indoor paintings are done from photographs\, sketches and field notes. The studio affords him the opportunity to capture fleeting effects of light not easily painted on location. \nKennedy’s subjects usually include the older\, time-worn elements of the New England area where he’s lived all his life – classic period buildings\, rusty fishing boats and quiet streets at twilight. Kennedy favors early morning and late afternoon light\, when the sunlight is stronger and long shadows deepen a mood. He cites Edward Hopper as primary influence. He relates to Hopper’s statement\, “What I wanted to do was paint sunlight on the side of a house.” \nKennedy grew up in Central Connecticut. He spent summers with his family in South Portland\, Maine\, where he was greatly impressed with the port city’s then largely abandoned waterfront. It was here his love for things of the sea took root. Upon graduation from the Paier College of Art (New Haven\, CT) in 1981\, Kennedy moved to Cape Cod and began focusing more on traditional plein air painting\, working outdoors year round. His use of color complements his interest in light and shadow. As an artist\, he has drawn inspiration from the rooftops of Provincetown\, the harbor and streets of Gloucester\, the catboats of Wellfleet\, and views around New Bedford and Portland\, Maine. He’s also roamed farther afield and painted in rural locations such as Nova Scotia and Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy. \nKennedy has lived on Cape Cod for over 30 years. His work is in many public and private collections\, including the permanent collection of the Cape Cod Museum of Art (Dennis\, MA)\, Cahoon Museum of Art (Falmouth)\, New Haven Paint and Clay Club (New Haven\, CT)\, Albany Institute of History and Art\, (NY) the Key Bank and People’s Heritage Bank (former names\, both in Maine)\, and Cape Cod’s oldest bank\, Seamen’s Bank. He has won awards at the Salmagundi Club in NYC\, North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester MA\, Gallery at Mystic Seaport in Mystic\, CT\, Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable MA\, and other locations. He is also an admired painting instructor.

SUMMARY:Philip Koch: Edward Hopper’s Legacy on Cape Cod
DESCRIPTION:Meet Philip and see his work at 5:30\, and then at 6\, he will give a talk and slide presentation on Hopper’s legacy of Cape Cod\, with an emphasis on the Truro studio. Discussion will follow. \nThe Highland House Museum is located on Highland Light Road in North Truro. The Museum occupies one of Truro’s best known landmarks\, the old Highland House\, a hotel built on the Highlands in 1907. Located near the Highland Light in North Truro\, it is a classic example of a turn-of-the-century summer resort hotel. A visit to the museum provides fascinating insight into the lives of the people of Truro dating back to early European settlers and the Native Americans that preceded them. Donations are graciously accepted. \nIt was seeing the light in Edward Hopper’s work that inspired Philip Koch early in his painting career to change from abstraction to realism. Koch\, a nationally recognized landscape painter\, has been granted over 15 residencies in Hopper’s former studio in Truro on Cape Cod. 14 American Art museums hold Koch’s work in their permanent collections. \nDonations for the Highland House Museum will be gratefully accepted.

SUMMARY:After Hopper Gallery Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Addison Art Gallery invites you to join us for the summer season’s showcase of work created by contemporary artists inspired by Edward Hopper and Cape Cod — where he chose to build his home and live for decades. \nArtists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Nearly half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by the area that this great American painter chose as his home.  \nCreative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. Acknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, “After Hopper” celebrates the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways.

SUMMARY:Cleber Stecei One Man Show Reception
DESCRIPTION:Praised for his magnificent 2016 Pops by the Sea painting celebrating the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, Cleber Stecei continues to rapidly garner accolades and collectors. \nStecei has a great appreciation for realistic portrayals of the human form\, as well as the spontaneous brush work of a plein air painting\, and he carefully tries to combine those qualities in his work. \n“A Master in the Making…represented by one of the Cape’s most prestigious galleries\, Addison Art in Orleans. His work has been noted in several national art publications and his paintings are in collections countrywide. Stecei’s talent\, age\, and new presence in the market have thrust him to the heady upper echelons of the art scene.”—Mary Grauerholz\, Cape Cod Life

SUMMARY:Josephine Del Deo: The Dune Shacks
DESCRIPTION:Josephine Breen Del Deo will speak on the legacy of the dune shacks at the Province Lands Visitors Center\, 171 Race Point Road\, Provincetown. Del Deo has lived in Provincetown since 1953 (with her husband\, the painter Salvatore Del Deo) where she has been engaged in significant community activity\, including her participation in preserving over 3\,000 acres of the state-owned Province Lands for inclusion in the Cape Cod National Seashore Park. Working tirelessly to preserve environmental and historic legacies\, Del Deo provides a rare perspective. She will also be signing her latest book\, The Watch at Peaked Hill\, about the dune shack community. These diminutive abodes have long attracted artists\, writers\, and naturalists longing to escape the hectic hubbub of their day-to-day lives. She brings this history to life\, setting it in the context of larger events and populating it with the interesting\, often eccentric characters who have lived on the dunes.

SUMMARY:Hopper Stories
DESCRIPTION:“Hopper Stories” is a unique series of eight short fiction films inspired by Edward Hopper’s masterpieces. The list of paintings includes “Nighthawks”\, “A Woman in the Sun”\, “Conference at Night”\, “First Row Orchestra” and others. \nThe idea of the series was to ask directors to choose the Edward Hopper painting that most intrigued them\, and to make a short film out of it. The directors are either well known — such as Mathieu Amalric in France (Best Director Award\, Cannes Film Festival)\, amazing documentarist Sophie Fiennes in the UK\, and Hannes Stöhr in Germany — or soon to be\, such as Martin de Thurah\, the new ultra-trendy Danish director. \nThe casts include Harry Potter girl Clemence Poesy as Hopper’s “Woman in the Sun”\, Michael Stuhlbarg (“Hugo Cabret”) as Edward Hopper\, and US documentarist Frederick Wiseman who is Edward Hopper’s voice in Mathieu Amalric’s film. \nThe series has toured in film festivals around the world and acknowledges the ongoing fascination of modern filmmakers for Hopper’s work.
