SUMMARY:After Hopper Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Artists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Nearly half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by the area that this great American painter chose as his home. \n“In my twenty years of running a gallery on Cape Cod\, I have met many artists who credit Hopper as an influence while creating in their own distinct styles — choosing their own sites to interpret and expressing their own emotions. But not every visitor is familiar with Hopper’s legacy — just as few tourists are aware that Provincetown\, not Plymouth\, is where the Pilgrims first set anchor. \n“Perhaps because of who he was\, a man with minimal social interaction who chose his friends carefully and kept his distance from the vibrant arts community we have long treasured here\, Hopper’s deep ties to Cape Cod are not as widely acknowledged as they deserve to be. \n“Every day\, on my way home from work\, I see the house that Edward and Jo\, his wife\, rented before they decided to build their home on a dune overlooking Cape Cod Bay. From my loft\, I can see the house he built\, its great window flooded with northern light. I live surrounded by the sites he painted and the families he brought into his closely guarded circle. \n“Fortunate as I am to live in this exceptional part of our amazing country\, and however much I find myself captivated by his work\, what motivated me to launch ‘After Hopper’ are the gifts that — uninsistently\, reclusively — he handed down to the artists of today. \nCreative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. Acknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, I initiated ‘After Hopper’ to celebrate the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways.” — Helen Addison \nCopyright 2015 AddisonArt\, Inc.

SUMMARY:After Hopper: Philip Koch Slide Talk
DESCRIPTION:Early in his career\, Philip Koch was inspired by seeing Edward Hopper’s art to change from painting abstractions to working in a realist direction. Since 1983 he has had 15 residencies staying and working in Hopper’s Truro\, MA studio. He is known both for his vividly colored landscape paintings and for his paintings of the interior of Hopper’s studio. Despite being the grandson of the inventor of Kodachrome film\, Koch never uses photography to make his paintings. He believes relying on direct observation and memory give his work a deeper emotional resonance. Koch’s art is represented in the Permanent Collections of 15 American art museums. He is a senior professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. \nKoch’s slide talk at the Cape Cod Museum of Art will show photos of Hopper’s Truro studio and will examine the impact Cape Cod had on Hopper’s art. He will address why Hopper’s art has become central imagery of how American’s define their identity. Koch will also show examples of his own painting done on the Cape over the last three decades.

SUMMARY:Olivier Suire Verley One Man Show Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Olivier Suire Verley is a solar painter\, craving for the vast spectacle of life and eager to discover new atmospheres\, new sceneries: in each of them\, he finds a teaching and\, as an alchemist\, transmutes it in nuggets of pure joy for our eye and mind. \nServed by a masterly craftsmanship\, this captivating stance allows Olivier to transport us in a universe of ochres\, yellows\, and reds mixed with subtle dark nuances – never black! asserted with an evident pleasure: volumes and light captivate\, trouble and reassure us\, all at the same time. Colorful figures stand in the center or merely cross the painting\, dreamlike\, unreal\, but every one of them a strong presence.” – © Antoine Moissac\n\nWe hope you can join us for Olivier’s return to the states for his 2015 show.

SUMMARY:Toast to Olivier Suire Verley
DESCRIPTION:A chance to visit our French Connection just before the reception from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Addison Art Gallery. \nThe French Cable Station was the American termination point for a telegraph cable that came directly to Orleans from France. It was installed in the 1890s and was almost 3200 miles long. During World War I\, General Pershing in France communicated with the US Government through this cable station. In 1927 the message that Charles Lindbergh had landed in Paris came through this station from Paris. It was then sent to the rest of the United States. Free guided tours are available of an historic collection of original Atlantic undersea telegraphic cables\, instruments\, maps\, and assorted memorabilia.

SUMMARY:Painting East Orleans
DESCRIPTION:Plein air\, French for “open air\,” is used to describe paintings created outdoors. French Impressionists\, including Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir\, advocated en plein air painting. Charles Webster Hawthorne\, who is attributed with starting the art colony in Provincetown\, came to Cape Cod to teach painting en plein air. \nWe hope you can join us for this special plein air event. Adults and children alike are enthralled by seeing a painting move from a sketch to a finished piece\, and delighted to meet so many accomplished artists. Sponsored by the Addison Art Gallery and Nauset Farms.
