SUMMARY:Beyond Bohemia Talk and Slide Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Mary Jane Treacy\, professor emerita of modern languages and literatures at Simmons University\, will tie the Cape’s Bohemians back to their days in Greenwich Village and to contemporary painters and their works. \nSince 2005 she has been involved with Reacting to the Past\, a national group of scholars writing interactive role-playing simulations for university history and political science courses. Her work with Reacting took her to New York\, literally as well as intellectually\, leading her to write Greenwich Village 1913: Suffrage\, Labor\, and the New Woman\, now in a second edition\, Paterson (New Jersey\, but just seventeen miles away) 1913: A Strike in the Progressive Era\, and Harlem 1919: A Question of Leadership. Her academic training in Hispanic Studies also led to a simulation on the aftermath of political violence in Argentina\, Argentina 1985: Questions of Memory\, Truth\, and Justice. She has taught Spanish and Latin American literature as well as courses in women’s and gender studies\, first-year college seminars\, and the honors program\, which she directed for over a decade. \nNow living on Cape Cod\, she is thrilled by the current interest in the East Coast’s bohemia and the rebels who came to view Provincetown\, Truro and Wellfleet as Greenwich Village’s “summer suburbs.” She is currently researching how these first bohemians shaped and were shaped by their Cape experiences.

SUMMARY:Figure Painters and Model at Work
DESCRIPTION:Paul Schulenburg has organized a group of artists to paint a live model from 1:00 to 3:300. The public is invited to watch the Figure Painters at Work\, welcome to ask them questions as they progress\, and to stay until 4:00 for extra time to explore the works and chat with the creators. Schulenburg’s group reflects the long tradition of artists painting the figure together; perhaps Charles Hawthorne’s Cape Cod School of Art classes are the most recognized. The list of other artists from the era known for painting figures and portraits includes Edwin Dickinson\, William L’Engle\, John Sloan and\, of course\, Edward Hopper who certainly didn’t paint with a group. \nWe are delighted that Sky Freyss-Cole will be the model.  \nIn this age of AI\, iPhones and Photoshop\, the Addison Art Gallery is especially pleased to open this intriguing viewing opportunity to the public. \nPaul Schulenburg is an internationally collected artist whose work has shown in the Hopper House Museum\, twice in solo shows at the Cape Cod Museum of Art\, and in many group exhibitions at CCMA\, Provincetown Art Association and Museum\, and Cahoon Museum of American Art. He has appeared over a dozen times in respected national art publications including a feature in Fine Art Connoisseur\, as well as on the cover of American Art Collector. Schulenburg won the Patrons’ Choice Award at the Copley Society of Art and was awarded a month long residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown MA. He is juried member of Oil Painters of America and the Portrait Society of America. In 1987 he was commissioned by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to create a portrait of museum trustee Eliot Forbes.

Jeff Norgeot will be signing Through My Eyes\, a book of poetry inspired by his life along the woods and shorelines of the lower Cape. \nMusic will be supplied by Natalia Bonfini. Natalia was a top 50 finalist on American Idol’s 20th season. Reinventing popular covers\, Natalia mashes up genres from soul to classic rock and back to her blues roots. She has a sound reminiscent of Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin\, and commanding lyrics such as those of Alanis Morissette.

Those lucky enough to be here in the quieter months know it is a time of exploration\, socializing and productivity. \nThe public is invited to join authors\, artists\, performers\, friends and neighbors at the Addison Art Gallery in celebrating Cape creators and discovering the results of recent inspirations and diligent work. \nStarting at 4:00\, Jonathan McPhillips will be working on an oil painting of the Commercial Street approach to Provincetown. McPhillips\, a cum laude graduate of Connecticut College with a BFA in Fine Art\, captures the coastal splendor of New England. Equally adept in the studio or on location\, Jonathan’s work encompasses harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and the distinct architecture of the coastal marine environment. \nAt 5:00\, Maryalice Eizenberg will be painting a marsh scene in oil and Amy Sanders will be showing pastel techniques.  \nMatthew Fitzpatrick\, author\nAfter 25 years on Wall Street\, Matt assessed his life and pursued his goal of becoming an author\, a dream hatched at twelve years old while reading Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot. This aspiration that was solidified years later over a pint of Guinness with Dennis Lehane\, who Matt hosted at the Pollard Library in Lowell\, MA named after his maternal grandfather.  As a 100-ton US Coast Guard master captain\, Matt splits his time between Chatham and Falmouth.  \nMatt will be signing his recently released fourth novel\, Forsythia’s Ride\, which is set in Chatham. Paul Schulenburg signing his book well as to discuss his recent paintings. \nThe staffs of two renowned Cape theaters will be on hand to preview this upcoming seasons and answer questions about how you can become involved. \nCape Rep Theatre\nArtists who wanted to develop a company dedicated to creativity and professionalism founded Cape Rep Theatre in 1986 and have worked hard to choose plays and musicals that continually challenge the artists who work there. Their two theaters are on 7 acres of land in Nickerson State Park in Brewster with a 135-seat Indoor Theater and an 200-seat Outdoor Theatre. “We make a deliberate choice to bring in artists from outside our community to keep our vision broad\, our company connected to the wider world and our productions as professional and creative as possible. Often our choices are works that may not ordinarily be produced because we try not to let size of cast\, degree of difficulty (or relative obscurity!) step in the way of choosing a show.” \nWellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre (WHAT)\nLauded by the New York Times for “establishing a beachhead for serious theater on Cape Cod”\, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater is a not-for-profit professional theater company dedicated to enriching the cultural life of the Outer Cape through plays and innovative programming that entertains\, inspires\, and informs a diverse\, multi-generational audience. Speaking of his passion\, Schulenburg said\, “One reason I am drawn to painting the fleet because the work is foreign to me. These men and women risk their lives in an unprotected environment. I paint on dry land\, working to produce a painting\, to capture a tradition.\n“We are involved in work that goes back to early days. Humans have long caught fish for nourishment\, and they have drawn — in the sand and on cave walls — for pleasure and to communicate. Today\, with diminishing fish stocks and AI\, our ancient endeavors hang in a precarious balance. I am honored that so many appreciate my commitment to these endeavors.”

CEO Hadley Luddy said\, “HPC is thrilled to partner with Addison Art Gallery and grateful for their support as we see unprecedented community need.” Ten authors will be on hand and 30 titles ranging from mystery\, art and memoir to history\, nature and architecture will be available.  \nJeannette de Beauvoir is a bestselling author of historical\, mystery\, and literary fiction (and an occasional poet!) whose Sydney Riley series is now on its ninth book. Her work has appeared in a number of literary journals and anthologies\, and she is a member of the Authors Guild\, the Mystery Writers of America\, Sisters in Crime\, and the National Writers Union. Her novels are firmly rooted in a sense of place\, whether a mystery series set in Montréal or historical fiction set in medieval France; she herself lives and writes from a small cottage by the seaside. \nYvonne deSousa’s latest book\, In Shelter of the Monument: A Provincetown Love Story\, is a coming-of-age memoir. A retired WWI Rear Admiral and senior strategist for the British Secret Intelligence Service\, fearing threats of war from the rising Nazi regime\, evacuates his wife and daughter to Highfield\, a country estate an ocean away from their home on the English Channel. As the world waits for war\, new lives and loves are kindled at Highfield.  \nRomy Maimon will sign four books benefitting the Cape Cod Emergency Pet Care Program. \nOrleans native Mary McDermott grew up with a passion for local history. Babies often arrive with no diapers\, bottles\, or formula. This is a great challenge for foster parents who need to provide necessities. \n \nThe Cape Cod Foster Closet provides clothing\, shoes\, toys\, books\, baby equipment (including formula and car seats) and furniture for all ages. Cape Cod Foster Closet also provides a new duffel bag or backpack for each child so that they never have to carry their belongings in a trash bag again. All items are donated by our generous community and provided free to families who care for other people’s children.

It is suggested that you arrive early (sunset will be at about 7:00). Carpooling is strongly advised. \nPlein air\, French for “open air\,” is used to describe paintings created outdoors. In Italian\, the term would be alfresco. In the 1870s\, the growth of plein air painting flourished with the introduction of paints in tubes. (Previously\, painters made their own paints by grinding and mixing dry pigments with linseed oil.) French Impressionists\, including Claude Monet\, Edouard Manet\, Edouard Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir\, advocated en plein air painting. Charles Webster Hawthorne\, who is attributed with starting the art colony in Provincetown\, came to Cape Cod to teach painting en plein air. \n“With plein air painting\, the eye perceives light and shadows from direct observation. Painting from memory is a challenge; you cannot possibly remember the nuances of reality. Author Lee Roscoe\, a journalist\, environmental educator and activist\, was privileged to have unique access to artists and tribal leaders. The book starts in the wetu (a domed hut dwelling)\, and looks at pottery\, wampum\, clothing\, adornment\, matting\, twining\, painting and more with some of the foremost Wampanoag creators. \n  \nArtist and MusicianEj Mills Brennan is a multi-media Mashpee Wampanoag Artist\, Musician\, and Educator with a firm belief in the healing power of the arts. In addition to showing her works in gouache acrylics\, and an amazing woven piece\, Emma will play her flute. Emma has produced two independent CDs\, Breath of Prayers II\, a collection of Solo Native American Flute\, and Breath of Prayers III\, Original Compositions: Piano\, Flutes and Vocal. She earned a Masters in Education at Cambridge College\, a Bachelors in Music at UMASS Dartmouth\, an Associates in Science\, Jazz and Contemporary Music\, UMaine Augusta\, and additional coursework at Berkeley College of Music and Portland School of Art.\n \n \nArtistRobert Peters is a Mashpee Wampanoag artist\, poet and author. Robert’s family moved to the Wampanoag homeland of Mashpee when he was ten. Here his father Russell entered a life-long battle to regain land and sovereignty for the Mashpee Wampanoag People. As a child\, Robert witnessed the 1976 Wampanoag Indian land claim\, trial and the tribe’s quest for Federal Recognition. Robert retired from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority after 24 years of service. During this period\, he observed the culture of Boston’s subway system working as a motorman\, union steward and at times a civil rights activist on the MBTA’s Orange Line. He drew pictures\, took notes and made commentary.\n \nThe Native Land Conservancy’s mission is to preserve healthy landscapes for all living things and help restore land back to its original state wherever possible. The Native-run group draws upon collective traditional cultural knowledge as indigenous people with generations of direct experience in the woodlands\, coastlines\, and waterways of New England. They are attending to the important work of protecting sacred spaces\, habitat areas for winged and four legged neighbors\, and other essential ecosystem resources to benefit Mother Earth and all human beings. All land is sacred in their eyes and worthy of special care; thus their reasons and interest in rescuing and preserving ancient ancestral village sites where their ancestors once lived and worked. \nTreats will include a non-alcoholic\, cranberry-based cocktail\, popcorn and walnuts. \nPreviews at Addison Art Gallery and addisonart.com.
