SUMMARY:In Thoreau's Views Plein Air Painting\, Show and Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Wishing to get a better view than I had yet had of the ocean\, which\, we are told\, covers more than two-thirds of the globe\, but of which a man who lives a few miles inland may never see any trace\, more than of another world\, I made a visit to Cape Cod.” — Henry David Thoreau \nArtists’ reception and exhibit\, at the beautiful Eastham Public Library\, featuring scenes immortalized by Henry David Thoreau and cherished by us today. \nIn addition to meeting contemporary artists\, the public is invited to join us in a step back to the mid-1800s and meet Henry David Thoreau (portrayed by historian Richard Smith) and a chat about his visits to Cape Cod. For more than 20 years\, Smith has “become” Thoreau\, dressing in meticulous 19th-century regalia\, sounding philosophical and looking as pensive as Henry. He has been featured on C-Span’s “American Writers” series\, BostonTV5’s “Chronicle”\, and traveled the country presenting Thoreau’s essays for libraries\, historical societies and schools. \nExhibit hanging all month.

SUMMARY:Abele and Eizenberg: Our Illuminated Landscape
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join Robert Abele and Maryalice Eizenberg for demonstrations from 4 to 4:45\, reception 5 to 7\, and an exhibition of new work capturing light-filled scenes from the shore\, gardens\, and towns of Cape Cod. \nMaryalice will reference a plein air study for a larger studio piece\, demonstrating a detailed underpainting start with possibilities for changes in composition. During application of heavier pigment she will discuss brush and color choices influencing emotional response. \nRobert Abele will discuss his use of the limited palette and how he strives for simplicity in his work\, demonstrating his process (refined over 30 years) working directly in oils applying paint in the alla prima technique completing his canvas in one session. Robert’s use of cold wax medium resulting in luscious impasto brush strokes on the canvas will also be covered.

SUMMARY:After Hopper 2019
DESCRIPTION:Artists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by his work and the area that this great American painter chose as his home. Creative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. \nAcknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, “After Hopper” celebrates the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways. \nWe will start with an oil painting demonstration by Maryalice Eizenberg at 4:00; the reception will run until 7:00. Eizenberg’s demonstration painting will be based on a building with architectural elements reminiscent of Hopper’s “Cape Cod Evening”. It has been unoccupied for many years and has that lonely feel often found in Hopper’s work. (Sadly\, it is scheduled for demolition in September.) \nWe hope you can join us.

SUMMARY:Olivier Suire Verley One Man Show Reception
DESCRIPTION:Always looking for new lights\, Olivier travels often\, to Italy (Rome\, Venice)\, Morocco\, Spain\, Egypt\, Mauritius\, etc. He shows throughout France\, in China\, Japan and\, in the United States\, exclusively at the Addison Art Gallery. His work is featured multiple books and films. \nArtist’s Statement \nHelen and I have been working together since 2005. I hope this exhibition will be as lively and full of spontaneity as the previous seven! \nMy first inspiration remains the human being and its environment\, its connivance; small scenes of life become exceptional if one knows how to pay attention to them. Fleeting lights and movement\, dynamics\, our hesitations that give a meaning to life. \nI love Helen Addison’s Gallery. The eclecticism of Helen’s choices\, the friendliness of her collector friends\, their loyalty and courage to open themselves to less conventional art forms. I too live on a coast: that of an Atlantic island\, Île de Ré; its charms\, for those who know\, could be confused with those of Cape Cod. Light\, sand dunes\, that “islander” character imposed on us by geography\, that seafarers’ solidarity\, and the endless sky that opens heart and mind. \n“When one imagines Olivier’s paintings\, it immediately brings to mind the true meaning of the French phrase\, “joie de vivre.” Spanning the world from Morocco to Rome\, Egypt to Venice\, Mr. Verley’s works inspire and capture the essence of his subjects\, be it horses and their Moroccan riders going full gallop across the plains or a farmer captured in a field of ruby drenched poppies. His paintings have the capacity to energize and evoke feelings of desiring to be there…in that place\, experiencing all the possibilities of life.” — Tom and Trish O’Connor \nJust prior to this reception the French Cable Station Museum (next door at 41 South Orleans Road) invites the public to toast Olivier Suire Verley at 4:00 pm. \n\nThe French Cable Station\, built in 1891\, was the American termination point for a telegraph cable that came directly to Cape Cod from France. It remained in operation until 1959 except for a few years (1940 to 1952) during WWII when it was closed for security reasons. News of the stock market crash and Charles Lindberg’s trans-Atlantic flight\, were among the many important messages sent over decades. The station was purchased in 1972 from France by a committee of prominent — and generous — Orleans citizens.

SUMMARY:Jonathan Earle: Emerging Artist One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Earle was born on Cape Cod in 1971. After graduating from The University of Massachusetts with a degree in landscape architecture\, he spent 20 years in architectural and construction management. As his career path moved him further and further away from expressing his ideas with pencil and paper\, he returned to his true passion\, painting. \n“Creating a sense of place in the landscape is at the core of landscape architecture. A sense of place is the experience or emotions associated within a familiar setting. It is this principle that I draw upon when painting\, the dimension that is formed by people’s relationship with their physical setting\, whether an actual figure in the painting or the viewer. I aim to capture the emotion and energy of that place. Whether it be the energy of a crowded street or the potential energy of idle traffic at a stoplight\, both evoke emotion and feeling for a place.” \nJonathan is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association\, where his work has received numerous Best in Show awards\, and The Arnold Coleman Award. His works have also received top awards from various other art organizations. Jonathan lives in Sandwich with his wife and two children.

SUMMARY:Marc Kundmann One Man Show Reception
DESCRIPTION:Marc Kundmann works in encaustic and acrylic media. Both allow him to build and remove layers of color\, transparency\, and pigments\, and to use texture expressively. His hope is that the resulting layers create not only intriguing and beautiful surfaces\, but also give emotional life to the subjects and hint at the mystery inside. \nFrom 3:00 to 4:00\, Marc will demonstrate how he creates starting with a spark of an idea and using a variety of media. He’ll begin with a base of charcoal and acrylic\, adding wax and oil for depth\, building the layers of color and texture for which his work is known. \nThe Opening Reception for his One Man Show will run from 5:00 to 7:00. \nKundmann studied and workshopped with fine artists connected to the long tradition of creating on Cape Cod including Robert Henry\, a student of Hans Hofmann\, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters\, Bert Yarborough and Richard Baker. Through them he learned to explore materials\, freeing himself from the constraints of representing the real world and allowing him to work expressively\, responding to color and composition allowing the painting to evolve into its final form.

SUMMARY:Jonathan McPhillips One Man Show Reception and Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonathan McPhillips from 3 to 4 as he demonstrates his process for creating a coastal painting. Using sketches\, plein air studies\, photo editing tools\, and memory\, he will create a painting with a unique style that elevates the source material to a higher level of visual attention and painterly expression. \nThen chat with him at his reception from 5 to 7. \nJonathan graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a Cum Laude Distinction in Fine Art. Jonathan’s artwork has evolved into a celebration of coastal New England. Working equally in the studio and on location\, his work includes the harbors\, beaches\, vessels\, and architecture of our coastal marine environment. \nRecent accomplishments include three awards in three juried shows at the Salmagundi Club\, NY\, NY\, in 2018. Jonathan also received signature status in The American Impressionists Society in 2018. He held several workshops last year including locations in Watch Hill\, RI and Hilton Head\, SC. Jonathan also continues to be invited by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the “Art in Embassies” program which has sent his work to U.S. embassies around the globe. \n“Creating art has been a constant in my life. After collegiate studies in modern techniques with traditional influences\, I have found my focus in “contemporary impressionism”\, a form of realism and painterly expression. For me\, each painting is a problem to solve\, or a puzzle to piece together…a playful\, yet serious endeavor\, and a celebration of our environment. There is no greater reward than knowing that a painting has somehow captivated a friend or a stranger. Whether the emotion I evoke leads to a purchase\, a new workshop participant\, or just an extended pause on a gallery browse\, it is truly inspiring to know that my interpretations on canvas can be a positive force for others. Maybe that is why I paint. In a world of global connectivity and digital clarity\, painting retains a sense of mystery for us all…a bit of magic…unspoken and unwritten threads connecting our hearts and minds. Through my paintings and instruction\, I intend to connect as many threads as I can\, for as long as I can.”

SUMMARY:On the Bright Side: Cynthia Reid and Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:In Cynthia Reid’s upcoming summer show\, “On the Bright Side\,” color\, shape\, and texture are key elements in her oil paintings. Reid’s bird portraits\, florals\, bird nests\, cottages\, landscapes\, and garden vignettes provide a contemporary take on traditional subject matter. In painting her flowers and birds\, she takes a whimsical approach and uses a sunny palette of colors. “These paintings are intended to evoke joy and portray the inherent beauty of the natural world\,” says Reid.\n\n\nWe will also be showing plein air works created that day during the Orleans Garden Tour.

SUMMARY:Swooping In for Wild Care
DESCRIPTION:Artists from across the Cape and beyond are joining the Addison Art Gallery in support of Wild Care. Spearheaded by artists SaraJane Doberstein and Amy Sanders\, and Helen Addison\, Swooping in for Wild Care includes an exhibit of new works by gallery and invited artists\, demonstrations from 3:00 to 4:30 and a reception from 5 to 7\, live music\, book signings and a raffle. \nEducational animals planning to attend include two Eastern Screech Owls\, Up Up and Nickerson\, and Turtle #45\, an Eastern Box Turtle. More information about these four-legged and feathery friends can be found here: https://www.wildcarecapecod.org/programs-events/animal-ambassador/ \nSaraJane Doberstein will be demonstrating the various techniques she brings together to create her backgrounds and foregrounds. Her preliminary oil sketch will be visible as she works directly over it. This will also show the editing and possible composition changes that occur during the painting process. These techniques will include combining glazing and layering with an alla prima approach using walnut alkyd medium. She will be working from photo references on a 16×20 inch linen paint board. \nJoin Amy Sanders to discover the secret to building depth and luminosity with pastel as I work toward bringing a painting to life through the building up of multiple layers. Pastel is a unique medium\, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance that is the hallmark of the medium. Questions\, comments and conversation of all things pastel are encouraged.

SUMMARY:Paul Batch: Sweet Light of New England
DESCRIPTION:Recent works by Paul Batch inspired by the sweet light found on evening walks around New England. The works in this exhibition are are a poetic response to shared experiences conveyed through paint\, representative of scenes we know while perhaps not intended to be literal representations of specific places. \nJoin the artist for a demonstration from 4 to 4:45 for a brief while surprisingly informative demonstration illustrating how composition\, value\, scale and edges can work together to create a sense of atmosphere in a painting\, followed by a reception from 5:00 to 7:00.

SUMMARY:Previewing "After Hopper" 2019
DESCRIPTION:Open House plus demonstrations by Marc Kundmann and Amy Sanders! \nArtists and collectors flock to Cape Cod from all across the globe\, just to see the sites that Edward Hopper painted. Half a century after his death\, new generations continue to be inspired by his work and the area that this great American painter chose as his home. Creative people in all fields learn from those who have gone before: while honoring their teachers\, they add their own talents and experience\, their own selves\, and make something new. Acknowledging and ever grateful for Edward Hopper’s influence\, “After Hopper” celebrates the artists of today who continue to pursue Hopper’s path in their own unique ways.

SUMMARY:Celebrate our Waters Artists’ Reception\, Demonstration and Book Signings
DESCRIPTION:Amy Sanders will demonstrate building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works towards bringing a painting to life through multiple layers. Pastel particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors\, weights and direction\, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance. Questions and comments from audience member of all ages will be encouraged and add to the event. \nSandy Macfarlane will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of her latest book\, Swirling Currents.\nDuring one remarkable day early in 2017\, more than two hundred highly endangered North Atlantic right whales\, nearly half of the entire world’s population\, were seen in Cape Cod Bay. Swirling Currents tells the stories behind the headlines highlighting how a local event is often part of a much larger picture. Whales; sharks chasing seals chasing fish; turtles stranding; functionally extinct oysters and aquaculture filling the gap; the Gulf of Maine heating swiftly and the Gulf Stream slowing down — all happening in the global context of dynamic coastal change. \nSusan Baur will be signing A Guide to the Best Ponds on Cape Cod and the Best Ways of Preserving Them. The aim of the Guide is to teach readers how the pond ecosystems on Cape Cod work and encourage them to treat ponds with care. With this guide you can find hidden jewels\, learn what every pond needs to stay healthy\, and leave those you visit cleaner than you found them. \nBaur lived in Chatham from 2003 to 2009 where she switched from swimming in salt water to fresh. Soon she became intrigued by the painted turtles\, stinkpot or musk turtles\, and enormous snapping turtles that she encountered in local ponds from Orleans to Harwich. She started an illustrated journal and made an entry for every one of the 60-plus swims she took each summer\, noting each turtle she encountered. Drawing maps of several ponds\, she marked exactly where she saw each one. Eventually she was able to identify about a dozen turtles by sight. Next she bought a couple of wet suits and extended her turtle-watching season to a full five months. \nHeidi Clemmer and Marisa Picariello will be presenting the Cape Cod Eco-Tales book series. Author Heidi Clemmer was an educator at Wellfleet Elementary School for 21 years. Cape Cod Eco-Tales is the result of a passion for the varied and significant eco-systems that dominate the Outer Cape Cod landscape. Illustrator Marisa Picariello is a Wellfleet resident who studied art at Wheaton College. She finds inspiration in the natural world and has always enjoyed exploring the Outer Cape landscape. \nFor information on other Celebrate our Waters activities\, please visit http://www.orleanspondcoalition.org/celebrate-our-waters

SUMMARY:Phillip Koch Painting Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Artist Philip Koch will demonstrate in the Gallery his practice of creating his colorful landscape oil paintings based on the black and white charcoal drawings he makes on location in the open air. \nA former abstract artist\, Koch was inspired early in his career by the work of Edward Hopper to change to working in a realist direction. Since 1983 he has been granted 16 residencies to stay and work in Hopper’s Truro studio. \nKoch is the great grandson of John Wallace\, a Scottish landscape painter and the grandson of John Capstaff\, the inventor of the world’s first commercially available color film\, Kodachrome. Ironically Koch avoids photographs as a source\, relying on direct observation and memory to make his paintings. Koch stated\, “I like to think of myself as following the example of Edward Hopper — painting is about an inner response and imagination rather than photographic description.” \nIn 2017 Swope Art Museum in Indiana held a solo exhibition of Koch’s paintings of the Hopper studio and the surrounding area. The Arnot Art Museum paired Philip Koch’s oil Uncharted II with a landscape by the famous 19th century American Impressionist painter Willard Metcalfe in the Museum’s 23 Pairs exhibition that was featured in Fine Art Connoisseur. The March issue of Terre Haute Living featured a cover story on Koch’s painting. Spectrum magazine\, published by Arts Iliana published a cover article on Swope’s Koch exhibition in its March issue\, and the June 2017 issue of Cape Cod Life magazine carried a photo of Philip Koch’s painting of Edward Hopper’s studio\,Truro Studio: Two Rooms. Koch continues to serve as the Artist in Residence at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo\, NY. \n16 American art museum’s hold Koch’s paintings in their Permanent Collections. He is a senior professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The Burchfield Penney Art Center is preparing a major museum of exhibition of Koch’s work for 2018. Philip Koch’s painting North Passage is prominently featured in the new book by David and Carl Little\, Art of Acadia published by DownEast Books.
