The light and landscape of Cape Cod played a major role in shaping the imagination of one of our greatest artists, Edward Hopper. Since 1983 veteran landscape painter Philip Koch has had 16 residencies staying and working in Hopper’s former studio in South Truro. As part of the 2018 Celebrate our Waters weekend, the Addison Art Gallery is sponsoring plein air painting, a fresh paint exhibition, book signing, reception and demonstration. Artists from Cape Cod and beyond will be painting at waterside sites around Orleans including Rock Harbor, Little Pleasant Bay at Paw Wah Landing, Town Cove and Pleasant Bay Community Boating. Their wet paintings will be brought to the Addison Art Gallery for an exhibition and reception from 4 to 6.
Amy Sanders will demonstrate building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works towards bringing a painting to life through multiple layers. Pastel particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors, weights and direction, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance.
